Story
Welcome to 8th century Eastern Europe. A time of endless turmoil, diplomatic trickery and bloody wars. The great Byzantine Empire is forced to repel the Arab hordes, who managed to lay siege to the mighty city of Constantinople. Along the Danube River the incoming Bulgars formed an alliance with the Slavic tribes and established a new state. The raiding Avars were pillaging the lands, while the diminishing numbers of Illyrians were struggling to keep their identity.

You are blessed or cursed to be born in that hostile and yet amusing world. Your journey begins in the rural areas of the Balkan peninsula as you bear the heavy burden of proving your valor before your people and fighting for your survival. Your heart is brave and your mind is clear, and you can’t stand the sloth of all the people around you who are confined in their daily chores.

You crave more! You desire adventures, perils and unknown lands. The blood of your proud ancestors runs through your veins, so you pick up the family sword and while you put it in its sheath you can hear the terrified screams and sense the blood dropping on your hands.

You have to cross the vast lands of the Balkans looking for your fortune, while absorbing the historical knowledge gathered for centuries, and if you fail to do so you will be doomed. If you fail to learn the lessons taught by history, you will die in vain.

Armed with a sword, a couple of waterskins and some pieces of dried meat, you set off, not knowing what’s ahead. Pay attention to every act of yours, because history honors only the brave. Heed the call of history!

Gameplay
  1. Characters:
In Pillars of History you will have the option of selecting one of four preset characters with their individual storylines. Each of them has a unique and captivating background that will affect the gameplay. Of course, you will be able to create your own heroes by choosing their nationality, class and specialization. Depending on your choices you will have different means, approaches and abilities at your disposal to overcome the obstacles in the game.

ccb602030a858aff0bea09333e4a3930_original.png

Each class and character will offer you a memorable experience and will reveal different aspects of the game. The other layer of customization will be realized through our skill system. Every class will have a set of specializations with unique active and passive skills.

  1. Exploration:
Being a realistic historical game, Pillars of History will pay special attention to the exploration aspect. During the early Middle Ages people were discovering new territories, nations, treasures and knowledge. You will have the chance to relive the same thrill by uncovering the mysterious lands of the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

e628f0a4408068cbc56a2d1c72d45811_original.png

Sometimes you might need extra help while exploring. Some areas might be hard to access, so you might need the help of a pathfinder or a map. For those services you will have to pay, and sometimes you will have to pay handsomely.

  1. Interactions:
The interactions with the people you meet will be crucial to your success. Every bit of information that you receive will be valuable and might bring you great riches, but if you choose to ignore it, then you might regret your decision further in the game. The Middle Ages was a time when pride mattered a lot, and you have to be careful with your words and deeds.

9d011797175b3506f3a49ea26ead7fbe_original.png

If you are careless you might be denied access to a rich town where powerful weapons are sold, just because you were disrespectful to some of its citizens. But if you have been helpful or polite you might receive a bountiful reward or a hefty discount. On the other hand, who needs to be respectful when you can just steal what you desire?! The choice is up to you, but be ready to bear the consequences.

  1. Survival
Survival is the hardest element to implement in every realistic game. That’s why we focus heavily on that aspect in Pillars of History. Be careful with your stamina - a tired warrior is as good as dead! In order to recover you will need to find food supplies and places to rest.

df3357d55bd13b99462af4cb6f434429_original.png

Be careful with your wounds - you need to treat those in a specific way. Drinking a health potion doesn’t sound very realistic, does it? Just be careful with everything!

  1. Equipment
You won’t be able to feel the potential of your character’s skills, you won’t be able to overcome the obstacles on the harsh roads, you won’t be able to earn the respect of people, you won’t be able to survive in battle if you are not well equipped. Having this in mind you will have to consider every in-game option of obtaining high quality gear. Of course, in Pillars of History all the gear will be authentic and related to the specified historical period.

Nations
  • The Bulgars
The Bulgars were semi-nomadic warrior tribes who flourished in the Pontic-Caspian steppe and the Volga region during the 7th century. They preserved the military titles, organization and customs of the Eurasian steppes, as well as pagan shamanism and belief in the sky deity Tangra. In c. 679, Khan Asparukh conquered Scythia Minor, opening access to Moesia, and established the First Bulgarian Empire. In the Balkans, the Bulgars became a political and military elite, and merged with previous populations, such as the Thracians and Slavs.

  • The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the continuation of the Roman Empire in the East during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, when its capital city was Constantinople. During most of its existence, the empire was the most powerful economic, cultural, and military force in Europe. Both "Byzantine Empire" and "Eastern Roman Empire" are historiographical terms created after the end of the realm; its citizens continued to refer to their empire as the Roman Empire and themselves as Romans.

  • The Slavs
Slavs are the largest Indo-European ethno-linguistic group in Europe. Slavic-speaking tribes were part of the many multi-ethnic confederacies of Eurasia – such as the Sarmatian, Hun and Gothic empires. From the early 6th century they started the great migration from Siberia and Eastern Europe and settled on the lands abandoned by the Germanic tribes that were fleeing from the Huns and their allies. When their migratory movements ended, there appeared among the Slavs the first rudiments of state organizations, each headed by a prince with a treasury and a defence force.

  • The Thracians
The Thracians were a group of Indo-European tribes inhabiting a large area in Eastern and Southeastern Europe.Thracians inhabited parts of the ancient provinces of Thrace, Moesia, Macedonia, Dacia, Scythia Minor, Sarmatia, Bithynia, Mysia, Pannonia, and other regions of the Balkans and Anatolia. There were about 200 Thracian tribes. At the end of the 6th century almost all Thracians in Thrace and Moesia were Romanized. In the 7th century AD the rest of the Thracians were assimilated as one of the primary ancestral groups of modern Bulgarians.

  • The Avars
As the Göktürk Empire expanded westwards, the Khagan Bayan I led a group of Avars and Bulgars out of their reach, eventually settling around 568 in what used to be the Roman province of Pannonia. Avars played an important role in early Medieval Europe intervening in Germanic tribal wars, wars against Byzantium, almost occupying Constantinople in 626. In the second half of the 7th century, the state, further weakened by a revolt precipitated by the creation of the Bulgarian state in the Balkans (680), survived until 805 when it submitted to Charlemagne.

  • The Khazars
The Khazars were a semi-nomadic people, who created the most powerful nation after the break-up of the Western Turkic Kaganate. Khazars long served as a buffer state between the Byzantine Empire and both the nomads of the northern steppes and caliphates of the south. They were one of the foremost trading emporia of the medieval world, commanding the western marches on the Silk Road and playing a key commercial role as a crossroads between Europe, China and the Middle East.

The Avars and Khazars are bonus nations that will be implemented in future expansions of the game.

Classes
  • Warriors
“He who conquers himself is the mightiest Warrior“ ― Confucius

Warriors specialize in melee combat but are well trained as archers as well. They can withstand and deliver a great deal of punishment, and have a strong understanding of tactics. Warriors can use almost any armor and weapon in the game and through their discipline and combat experience can easily dominate any foe.

  • Archers
“Archery does not get difficult or hard to understand until the arrow misses“ - Milan E. Elott

Usually not very durable, archers can unleash an overwhelming amount of damage from afar. Archers are coldblooded machines with hands of steel. Focused and dedicated in their control, the bow is a weapon of mass destruction. If you dare come closer, you risk being cut to pieces by their razor-sharp daggers in the blink of an eye.

  • Stockbreaders
"He settled down to the congenial occupation of stockbreeding, on what was then considered to be a large scale" - Ernest Favenc

They don’t use fancy weapons but have a number of specific skills which make them dangerous foes. Stockbreaders rarely travel alone, dogs, tamed wolves and bears, as well as falcons and hawks, are their faithful companions. So if you manage to dodge the rough crooks, be ready to be torn to pieces by their ferocious pack.

  • Priests
“The king nodded. “What are the priests doing about this?” he said. “I saw them throwing one another in the river, sir.” The king nodded again. “That sounds about right,” he said.“They’ve come to their senses at last.” ― Terry Pratchett

Christianity is steadily taking over the Balkans, but the old gods still have their faithful servants - the Priests. They can mesmerize you with just a couple of words and convince you to do their bidding. And if you decide to engage them physically you will be amazed by the capabilities of their thin but tough bodies.

248d94b0ac808e08e4d48a525ca0b975_original.png

  • Mercenaries
“That’s how you tell a merc is dead; he just stops collecting paychecks.” ― Mercedes Lackey

They are the ones for the job, of course, if you possess the right amount of money. Mercenaries are masters of disguise and those cunning creatures are experts with light weapons such as daggers, short swords, even cooking knives.

  • Merchants
“A merchant is someone who figures out how to select, how to smell, how to identify, how to feel, how to time, how to buy, how to sell, and how to hopefully have two plus two equal six.” ― Millard Drexler

Master manipulators, merchants go well beyond the mere haggle. Having to defend themselves and their cargo while in transit, they developed a unique fighting style - an amalgamation of timing, quick thinking and trickery.

The Merchant and the Mercenary are classes that will not be available in the initial game release. They are planned for future expansions.

Education and Gaming
Many people love to play games, but fewer and fewer people want to read and to gain new knowledge. People today don't want to acquire new knowledge through the traditional ways of education. Everything in our world is changing faster that we can cope to perceive it, but if we turn our attention to education things are much different. To understand what we mean just open your Internet browser and search for cars in 1960 and cars in 2017, then search for a classroom in 1960 and a classroom in 2017. Get it!? We believe that education is way behind its time.

That’s what we are trying to do at Tritan Studios with our project Pillars of History. We are creating a game that under the veil of an entertaining RPG offers the players the possibility to smoothly acquire huge amount of interesting historical knowledge about the Balkans and Eastern Europe. All education elements of our game are implemented seamlessly in the gameplay so they feel like a natural part of Pillars of History. By doing so, the players will broaden their knowledge without stressful situations and most importantly, they will do that because they want to!

Where are the developers actually from? Something eastern european, not Arizona as stated on the campaign pagge.

Bulgaria, from thier Kickstarter profile:

"Tritan Entertainment" is a company based in the United States, founded and entirely owned by Mariya Halcheva.

"Tritan Studios" is a Bulgarian Company founded and entirely owned by Enyo Zyapkov, Ivan Fortunov, Radostin Stoychev and Bozhidar Bakev. The company is an independent game studio devoted to high quality games and entertainment. We are open to suggestions and opinions, because only through sincere communication we can polish our products.

The Arizona company likely found for crowdfunding and PR things.

*looks at cam* Historical game. .. Educational game. .. *sighs* .. You know?!

Actually, I don't have time to answer stupid questions. Give me a task and I'll code it. But I need money for that.
:D

Fucking sold, guys.

Anyway, that pitch isn't really convincing but I am a sucker for historical games. Historical realism, early middle ages, Eastern European .. I'll keep an eye on this.
