Operation Abyss: Controller Issues?

I know some of you guys play DRPGs, and I know that Generation Xth got some traction here. If any of you have played the Operation Abyss remake, have you figured out how to get it to work with a controller? I've got everything working, but for some reason the alternate uses of the dpad (switch to subdisk/inventory, switch targets for an attack, set an amount of money for the growth surgery) don't work, only movement and menu navigation do.

It feels way better playing with a controller, except that it doesn't work. Any advice would be great!

If nothing else works for you remember you can always use programs like ReWASD or JoyToKey to assign all of the keyboard commands to your controller buttons and inputs.

In the case of a controller input having multiple functions and conditions remember that you can do stuff in ReWASD like:

- Single-press of d-pad's UP does X function, Double-tap press of d-pad's UP does Y function
- it also lets you assign "long-press" functions, so you can add yet another function to this d-pad UP input by having it do Z function when long-pressed (held depressed).

Honestly considering this is a game that doesn't have fancy analog movement or anything else and it uses only menu navigation and/or grid-based movement I think you'll be better off just using a remapping program and assigning the keyboard functions to your controller than wasting potentially hours trying to troubleshoot.

EDIT: JoyToKey is free and technically it has all of the functions of ReWASD but it's much more complicated to set up, whereas ReWASD is easy as pie to understand and program what you want, for example you can just press the controller's button and the ReWASD GUI will immediately pop up the function menus/options for that specific button, stuff like that.

ReWASD is not free but I'm sure you can figure out a way to acquire it if you don't want to pay. It has a 14 day trial, though.

And of course there is also always AutoHOTKEY, you can do pretty much anything you want with AHK but you need to write the scripts.

EDIT 2: another free option is Antimicro.

Oh, also maybe you can try making the game think you're using a default xbox 360 XINPUT controller?

Try using the x360ce controller emulator program, what it does is that it makes the game THINK you're using a bog-standard xbox 360 game pad controller with the default xinput1_3.dll instructions.

It might work and then the game will function properly? If it doesn't then you can try a remapping program.

Thanks, aweigh! I haven't heard of either of those. I'll look them up. The remapping sounds more like what I need--the functions SEEM like they should work, they just aren't registering in certain windows.

Well, the struggle continues. JoyToKey seems to work to resolve my issue, but it introduces a new one where the game is now receiving input from the keyboard AND the gamepad, it appears--it's occasionally skipping menu options as I press up or down. I'll post here for posterity if I end up solving this.

ReWASD has an option that disables the controller inputs and instead replaces them with the ones you assign from the keyboard; this avoids that problem. You can disable the controller's native functions individually or all-at-once, and then just assign only the keyboard/mouse inputs you want to each controller button. It's the field titled 'gamepad mapping', you select 'NONE' and then go back and assign a keyboard key to the default field.

I currently don't know if JoyToKey can do that too, you'd have to look into it. Also don't forget about Antimicro.

And no, I swear I'm not an advertisement, lol. Just wanted to let you know. You can find cracked versions of ReWASD easily enough on popular torrent sites.

Thanks Aweigh. That's the kind of feature I thought I needed but I couldn't find in JTK.

HOWEVER! I did just resolve this. It turned out to be a steam problem. It was recognizing my 'generic gamepad' (a USB SNES controller) and the key bindings worked, but I believe it thought that I had a joystick and it was probably passing a -1 to +1 value for up/down and left/right axes, which I'm guessing wasn't working. I ended up (in steam, not in the game itself) going to Steam > Settings > Controllers > General Controller Settings and making sure "Generic Gamepad" was checked, then I had to go back up one level to Controllers > Desktop Configuration. I had to rebind all of the left d-pad keys as a D-pad and rebound the buttons to actual keyboard keys instead of an axis.

Hahah - now that you have it solved I was going to add my solution which was to play it like I did - on the PS Vita (RIP PS Vita :( ).

Operation Abyss remake? What the fuck are you talking about? Are you under the impression that the PC version is a remake?

Thanks to the Vita that we got some great drpgs. Plus the OLED screen always looks great. Never seen the LCD version and how it compares. But games sure do look nice on the OLED

It's a remake of Generation Xth and its sequel, which I mentioned in the first sentence of my post: "I know that Generation Xth got some traction here. If any of you have played the Operation Abyss remake..." Ie., the remake, which is called Operation Abyss.

I think the last handheld that I bought was a PSP... I've never even seen a vita in person.

Best handheld I have ever used with a very good DRPG and JRPG list and availability of retro PS1 games as well, and that is not to take away from Nintendo (3)DS and most recently the Switch, which is a great handheld but one I find a bit too heavy.

After long sessions it does tend to feel weighty. Don't know if the LCD version is lighter. But from what I can gather the launch models are a lot more premium in build quality. Sony fucked themselves with the Vita. Great handheld with shitty memory cards sizes and prices. But the OLED is beautiful. I wished we got Etrian Odyssey and the Persona Q games on Vita. Ended up having to buy a 3DS because of SMT 4, Etrian Odyssey and Persona Q. Don't regret it but I like the Vita a lot more
