I wouldn't be opposed to an early access release where persistence is maintained throughout similar to Project Gorgon which I've played for the better part of a decade. That's been publicly accessible since pre-alpha in 2013 without character progression wipes and I think that's turned out pretty well as another niche 'old school' MMORPG.

Just don't be dumb and force a subscription until it's worth paying for one.

Fuck everything about this. I'm ok with some beta testing, but the last thing I want is another release like Project Gorgon or Mortal Online 2. Give me a full game with a ton of content on day 1.

another release like Project Gorgon
ehm

one of the most underrated MMOs on the market. Became one of my all-time favorite games.

and to be fair, it has like ...2? developers, and is pretty much the only crowd-funded MMO to not fail spectacularly

Project Gorgon, I din't liked that your char is too gear dependent. If I can't kill monsters naked as an caster, is too gear dependent for my taste.

I honestly hope that M&M will be great.

I like this quite a bit. I'm interested to hear some opinions on this.

Text-based interaction

Would prefer an adventure game style UI. The amount of verbs it provides will be presumably known and limited.
The text-based was done in text-based games because there's no alternative, but if you already have the 3D representation, it doesn't make much sense rather than directly interacting with it.

Not to be confused with a context sensitive interactions.

It's been a while since I put any news in here. I have been super discouraged with MMO's as of late. Anyhow, I found this interesting. Maybe you will too.

This question was asked on a stream.

Does the game have zones or is it a seamless world?

The video is short enough to watch but if you just want the answer. It will have zones. Three reasons why are,

Nostalgia
Gameplay implications
Flexibility in design

What this is not:
1. An Alpha, Beta, Pre-Alpha, Omega, or any other test indicating that we're close to releasing. We are still working on our Proof of Concept at this time.

:what:

Maybe I'm thinking of something different than Niche when I read, "proof of concept". Please walk me back from this cliff.

24+ years of EQ already proved the concept. They are just slow because it's like 3 guys tinkering away slowly. It looks more like a few industry guys showcasing what they can do to get a job or something. I can't imagine this as a real game.

In that case which will come first? Pantheon or Monsters & Memories? I was hoping this would be 2-3 years out at most given that they seem to be able to pump out content like crazy.

I hope that they fix one huge problem with EQ. Enemies at mid and high levels takes too long to die. I mean, even as a necromancer, throwing multiple DoTs at the enemy, at lv 32, takes multiple minutes to kill a single mob. It is not fun of engaging. I liked the high penalty for death and the threat which any mob posses, but din't liked the extremely low lehtality of the game and even stopped playing p99 due it.

They are calling it a proof of concept because they are making something akin to a vertical slice, but much more involved. Their current goal is to complete the following:

All races and classes implemented
First major city complete (night harbor)
Enough content to reach max level
Starter quests

Once these things are complete then they will start promoting the game and seeking funding. Right now they just want to prove themselves to the community and they don't want investors fucking with their vision.

They are doing testing this early on because they are doing their own netcode from scratch and want to make sure they are on the right track with it before they get any deeper into the coding. They are trying to avoid tech debt.

As far as release goes, when someone on YouTube asked when the game will be done, I said my guesstimate is about three years. A dev replied to my comment saying "sweet, that gives us more time", so I assume they expect to be done faster than that.

They are pretty fast at making content, but they want all the systems in place before focusing on that.

You miss the point. Its not about killing mobs quickly. It never has been. Almost every MMO in existence caters to this mindset. If you are wanthing to play an MMO where the mid to high level (and early levels too) has mobs dropping like flies, you simply need to choose any MMO on the market and start playing. Hell, most of them you can buy a level boost if that is your desire. Please keep that mindset as far away from this game as possible. Its a poison. Or better yet, play an ARPG.

I'm fine with giants requiring like 8 spells to be killed. The problem is when even kobolds can resist having their blood turned into fire, raw dark energy damaging them, a skeleton meleeing them down with dozens of spear strikes for a very long time.

From two melee hits at lv 1 and kill a mob to at lv 32, taking more than a minute to kill a mob. It kinda kills the fantasy of being a powerful caster. In some battles, I was throwing my pet, casting 3 DoTs and ALT + TABing into a manga with no risk. Just tedium. In WoW classic, I can just insta cast corruption + curse of agony and go to the next target.

EQ would be better if mob of my level could kill me fast but also died fsater.

But with a group they die 10 times faster.

We've been over this already, many times. You are effectively playing the game in a way it wasn't originally intended to be played (that is, solo from start to finish). If that's the kind of game you want you picked the wrong one, as others have already told you. It was designed with group dynamics in mind, see anvi's post (or mine in response to your complaints in the EQ thread). EQ is never going to work the way you want it to, because it was never designed to work that way. By inference, since Monsters & Memories is designed with EQ sensibilities in mind, you should reasonably assume it won't work that way either.

Please stop bringing this up, it's really fucking annoying having to give the same answer to the same clueless whinging over and over and over and over.

There are a crapton of people popping in all at once, yet there are no hiccups or server lag. This is incredibly impressive.
