Grunker you are one annoying ass. That's the best looking UI I've seen in an RPG in a long time.

It's way worse than the UI of M&MVI and VII, for example. What's wrong with mentioning that? They had a perfect template, and yet they make a worse one because floaty webdesign UIs are in. The only thing that UI does better is quick access spells, abilities and potions, and that could be implemented easily into the old UI.

The best I can say about it is that it is better than most other modern floaty UIs I've seen.

Grunker, there's nothing really floaty about it. It's a classic "book"-style GUI.

Still too floaty. But as far as floaty piece-of-shit UIs go, this is none too shabby.

The minimap is disgusting though.

Are you trolling us or do you really consider anything that doesn't give the impression that you're staring at the game through a hole in the UI "floaty" ?

It seems you are imbuing my words with meaning I didn't give them myself.

floaty [ˈfləʊtɪ]
adj floatier, floatiest
1. filmy and light floaty material
2. capable of floating; buoyant

The opened inventory screen floats. It is but lightly connected to top and button, it hangs around in the middle of the screen for no reason, creating both background noise (from the game in the background) and making the inventory screen is smaller than it could be for no obvious reason.

It is a good UI, but it could have been better.

Grunker is spending too much time in the P:E thread, I'm afraid :(

Considering the state of anger you fall into whenever RIOT makes some insignificant change to some random splash art or something, I don't think you're the one to point at others and shout "autism" for their criticism.

I can't stand that art, they just don't get M&M. It should look goofy. Games have become so serious now, you can't even get a bit of sillyness and self-depreciation. This game will be more generic, bland and dull than Grimrock.

I don't find the former to be "so serious" at all. It reminds me of something like the artwork from Pathfinder.

The latter, however, its goofiness admittedly a staple of M&M, was always awkward and gawky. It has no place in a game made a decade later and its plainness and stark design would be more of a turnoff than anything else.

It's too sleek, it looks like World of Warcraft art. In fact pretty much every modern fantasy art is indistinguishable from World of Warcraft nowadays, see the art for Everquest Next. This "Ashan" BS or whatever that's supposed to mean is in the same vein.

You don't need to put people in silly costumes but there's surely a way to incorporate a goofier art style without having everything looks ultra bland. Why would I care about any of the characters above if no personality oozes out of them? Why would I care about the "world of Ashan", like the world of MMVI which as the game went on you practically felt as if you lived in it and loved, if everything is bland and the Monty Pythonesque aspects are eliminated? I doubt young kids who have grown watching nothing but modern bland TV would be able to have any frame of reference and create this sort of flavor, sad as it is.

The thing that UI does better is fitting fucking seamlessly into the million screen resolutions that exist on the market.

Make a petition to hardware developers to choose one true resolution for everything and stick with it for the rest of eternity. Until then, STFU.

I can see your point, HHR. They're definitely taking the look and visual feel of the series into a different direction, but then again so did the Heroes products.

Change has to happen. You should know that. I do believe that a lot of the spirit of the Might and Magic humor and goofiness as you put it will be evident in the content, hopefully in things like the characters' voices, and so forth. I just don't think there's any room for silly stuff when it comes to the way the screen is laid out.

The nickname of one of the developers is "Marzhin93". Do I trust a 20 year-old kid to make an old-school game that stays true to a prestigious series' spirit and insert the right subtle references, often cultural? Sorry but I really don't. He was ten years-old when World of Warcraft was launched. I don't trust people who grew with aughties media to get it right, it's just not possible.

GUI, GFX, Sound and art-style are secondary characteristics of games. So long as the game ergonomics and gameplay are not affected I coudn't care less.

Dress up with huge drawn weapons and armor always was one of my favorite parts of M&MVI-VII. It's not M&M for me if you can't put herbs into empty bottles and create shiny new potions

UI design criticism ?

I hear only "dress up game", "floaty", "looks like World of Warcraft", "looks just like the Duel of Champions UI" ...

UI design questions that really matter:

Is the UI ergonomic, fast and responsive?
Can every command be set on a key?
Is the menu layout self-explanatory and intuitive?
