Interesting to read others views. I came to the Codex looking for good RPG and had no expectations what you guys were about.

What I found was a community that really knows its stuff. I read about many games that I had never heard off. What's more - often when a game tweaked my curiosity and I read the threads - I found you guys were already well on the case giving pages and PAGES of opinion and detail.

LoX was the first game I picked of Codex and found it everything I was looking for.

Spent 12 pounds on a pre release version and have exactly 57 hours on record playing it. I have not finished it as at one point I was waiting for the final release. Whilst playing it I really enjoyed the challenge, music and graphics. There are a few things I did not like so much such as the too harsh food mechanic, font sizes and that often you would encounter something that was just too powerful.

Saying that I really respect those guys that play the game on Hardcore mode - impressive.

For a small independent developer - this game is might be amazing - I found no bugs in my play through.

I can't follow the story either. I was looking for a Bard's Tale type game with group turn based combat - this game exceeded all my expectations.

Maybe I was starting at a low point -

Solid RPG - no doubt about it.

You will find posts here that range from trolling to racism to idiocy replete with transsexual porn links. Peel away the shit and you won't find a better place to discuss RPGs. The rest you learn to tolerate. This place tolerates EVERYTHING but shit RPGs.

Pope is a real contributor here and I have appreciated his guides and build advice videos.

After reading Pope Amole II's awesome guide... and going to play this...

I have the same configuration. Here is a little information that I can share with you.

I have a 3-3 configuration that has been working:

Front row: Paladin (sword/board) Explorer(axes) Thief(Sword/Board & Shruikens)
Rear row: Cleric (Polearms) Bard (Bow) Mage (Polearms)

Bard can hit all with buffs being in the middle. I saw Pope recommend Bard as front as a possibility. I may try him in the center of the front row, with the cleric in the center of the rear so I can hit everyone with buffs by either of them without swapping spots. I move the paladin and thief around on the front line as well when needed. Pope is right, daggers damage is shit unless you need high accuracy to hit something. As Pope mentioned you are better to put a status effect on the enemy and get 100% accuracy. Shruikens are nice as well. Makes me wonder about the bard with bows.. bows aren't fabulous either but the bard is important given buffs and debuffs.

So i bought the game and started a veteran playthrough.

Explorer - Cleric - Mage - Mage - Mage - Mage.

Atm lvl 22, but made some mistakes in char builds (didnt level herbalism and mercantilism) and thanks to RPG OCD think i will restart with the same party composition.

Almost cleared the desert zone (sand worms and golems) and so far my mages destroy EVERYTHING.
Its either aoe blizzard or single target hammer of the destroyer / meteor.
Funny party that the so far the most damaging mage spell is PHYSICAL dmg.

Think i might pick up the ICY SHARDS spell that gives bleeds. From the description it should be a massive debuff working great with Meteor.
TBH the game is like Pope said above average with issues but i love old school RPG's, and if you are not careful its punishingly hard and thats rare nowadays....

Jebus, the sheer amount of potions you have to buy for that party would be insane?

Nah, I think he'll do fine. 4x inferno will do such huge damage that he won't need more than 1 cast of it against most enemies vulnerable to fire. And inferno is cheap enough to cast 2-3. There will be slight issues against some bosses (like the fire titan, I guess), but even there it will be about 4-8 potions and that won't be frequent.

It works like a mage Shuriken, except the hit damage isn't that high but the bleed debuff is great.

Create a custom note of all the fruit bushes that you see on the map. They refresh every 3 days. Certain maps have a crapload of them, like Rasmura, Devonia, and Nabros. Go around gathering the food, you should be able to do a 8 hours rest every fight or two and you won't need to buy pots (which drop off plenty off soldier/guard encounters anyways).

Also a small tip for new games - if you comb the starting village there are phat lewts to be had in boxes and barrels. Also there is 200golds in a tree root left to the inn dude. Usually i get around 1200-1500g before even stepping out

Part of the reason I liked this game so much was that within the two rows of four, you have some flexibility on how to create your party. I went with the default party and had a 3x3, but I have seen some guys went with four melee in the front. I am particularly interested in your 2x4 set up with four mages at the back. Like you I found my mage did more damage than any other char.

I levelled the mercantilism skill a bit but found later on in the game I was swimming in cash - mainly because I think the loot in merchants and chests are random and the fact you can't store anything outside of your inventories.

No point buying 100 health potions in this game (unlike others) as the weight will cause problems.

Keep us updated how you get along!

There is no way to keep four chars in back game will automaticly place them in front row if you dont have another char before them.

Explorer cleric and 2 mages were front row. In armor ofc. Since mages bave lots of skill points i could afford some lvls in armor. Also restarted so will keep you informed!

Wow - talk about thinking outside of the box - I would never think of doing that as my Mage had tiddly hit points. Good luck!

Yup thats the one Pocketmine, tho i found a mistake in it - mages cost 3 skill points to level armor, instead of the 2 thats written in there.

Ok small update, I restarted the game. Atm lvl 6 and its going really good. Mobs die fast.
Pumping con and speed every level and armor+sparks+meditation on mages. Maxed sparks and will wait till lvl 10 to get blizzard.
TBH i am tempted to include the bodybuilding in the mage build, but kinda think i might end up starved on skill points. Hm....... will have to think about it. On max lvl its extra 120 hp, not sure if its worth it, but its oh so expensive
Think il skip rest of the spells till i get Icy shards (maybe, dunno if this is really mandatory) and Meteor ofc for those SWEET SWEET wounds (over 20 wounds makes the mob unable to hit anything).
Leveling all the utility skills on Gaulen and the poor bastard atm is kind of a mule, cant hit the broad side of a barn. But capping herbalism, perception and mercantilism is a prio over his melee abilities.

Got to be really careful with distributing skill points on mage spells, stuff gets obsolete really fast, unlike lets say "sword/axe/mace" skills that you just exchange weapons for.

A small update.

I've hit lvl 10 and gotten the Blizzard spell. That made clearing out those 10 man groups in the 2nd zone a laugh, they didnt even touch me. Was very satisfactory when i remember the pain i went through the first time. Take that weapon masters & archers!

:yeah:

Welp, I've hit a brick wall.

Cleared out as much as possible of Sporia forest, and the beach. Explored Rat Cave to the end, killed the hounds too. Can't battle past guards or the ogre cunt. :negative:

Might have to restart it on medium difficulty with a different party comp sometime..
