Part 15: Frozen Tundra, Infernal Pit, The Ancients' Way, The Ice Cellar, Arreat Summit, The Worldstone Keep, Throne of Destruction.
The Frozen Tundra is a rather frustrating area for a Whirlwind Barbarian, with Little Buggers zapping around, and those big flame throwers with lots of HP. A pack of three of the big brutes caused unexpected big problems. Otherwise the other noteworthy thing that happened in this area was finding another Set Item.
Iratha's set is popular with D2R, since the complete set gives the Pierce ability (but now Double Throw also pierces, so big deal...). But in D2, it's only the Belt + Gloves combo that is really useful, giving 20% IAS in addition to the +5 minimum damage.
I reach a new milestone, when for the third time I can carry no more Gold.
I find a nice Barbed Club, which will make a fine Strength Runeword.
In the Infernal Pit lack of Life Steal is becoming a serious problem, so give me Strength.
Now I lose the Mana Steal, but +2 mana after each kill will help some.
One should not judge a monster by the quality of its skin.
Kroesus is a big Mana's Boy, always crying "I need Mana". So I decide to equip some gloves with Mana Steal that I forgot I had when equipping Strength. I also find a Charm with +8 Mana which helps a bit.
I like it here, where the gold grows.
The Ancients.
They were mostly harmless.
One day Kroesus too will be an Ancient made of gold.
In the Worldstone Keep I find a Unique Belt.
Can it be...Goldwrap? But no, it's only Bladebuckle.
Entering the penultimate area of the game.
I decided now is that time to Imbue an item. The alternatives are a weapon, a circlet, or a pair of gloves. Unfortunately I don't have any Exceptional gloves (not sure if it matters, though). The chances of getting a better weapon than what I have is very small, so I decided to go for the Circlet. I actually still have the Cap with the +24% Gold Find Jewel that was like the very first magical item I found. I haven't found a single Charm of the same type since then. So the Circlet will more likely be useless anyway, since part of the challenge is to always equip the item with highest Gold Find. But I can always socket it if it's good, and then hope to find a better Jewel of Greed.
But what that girl child of a blacksmith produces is useless.
So I decided to socket the General's Tan Do Li Ga, so that I have a fast weapon with both Life and Mana steal by putting a regular Skull in it.
This solves most of the mana problems, and I can re-equip the gloves with +15 Magic Find.
Time for the penultimate showdown.
Uh oh! Did I use the wrong pronoun?
These vile abominations had so much HP that I decided to re-quip the Strength weapon again to get 25% Crushing Blow, 'cause I was getting winded by all that whirling.
Since I had re-equipped the Stealth armour for the extra safety, Magic Find suffered and none of the monster waves dropped anything noteworthy.
But before the ultimate fight, against Baal, I re-equip my MF armour again.
He's relatively easy prey for a melee character. Diablo was definitely the hardest boss.
Baal dropped four Magic and Rare weapons, two (a bow and an Assassin weapon) of which I didn't even bother to identify. Of the others one was yet another Maul.
The other weapon can be a candidate for my Merc once he reaches lvl 38.
At the end of Normal difficulty I have managed to accumulate a bit over 1 million Gold. So I'm not even halfway to my goal yet...
Otherwise things are looking good (spent too much on Stength and too little on Vitality, maybe).
Now all that is left of Normal difficulty is the Cow level. Those stupid cows hit really hard, so I am a bit anxious...
