Old Topic Title: Where the fuck are the big dungeons? (Daggerfall).

After the failure of trying to get a piece of shit 360 controller to work, I went back to mouse + keyboard and decided to tolerate the inferior controls. Anyways, all I am finding are shitty 3 room crypts/tombs/graveyards so far and I can't find any big dungeons. Do I need to join a guild to get maps to these dungeons first? Also, where can I buy some potions of cure deadly disease from a level 1 rat? I died like 20 times trying to fast travel cause a god damn rat gave me the plague. :( Do I need to join the Temple guild to buy such potions or is there an alternative?

Edit: I went to some random dungeon to find out why my ship was sunk...

JESUS CHRIST these dungeons put Morrowind AND Oblivion combined to shame! I think I explored the ENTIRE dungeon before finding the scroll for the asshole mage that sent me on the mission. I think my combined time not including breaks was like 3 hours or something. Thank fucking god I got that Ebony Dagger at the beginning because mithirl Tanto almost broken from killing so many goddamn werewolves.

And the Recall spell.

And the Water Breathing spell.

I bought a Levitate spell because there were a couple places I could have used it. I was lucky the asshole wasn't up in some un-climbable spot...

...

I  this game. It's got tits, challenging monsters, extensive dungeons, cool character creation, and decent combat.

Set the game up to allow freelook, you unwashed peasant.

You need to take quests or find maps to find more interesting dungeons. Theoretically you can just stumble upon them blindly by running around like a retard without fast travelling, but I wouldn't count on that.

Potions are rare commodity in Daggerfall, and getting access to potion maker requires some rank increases in most temples/Dark Brotherhood.

You can get a spell if you can cast it, or just drop any quest you're doing and ride fast to the closest temple temple whenever you get infected. The latter will cost you, obviously, and may cause the quest to fail, but such is life.

Indeed, I always configure the game's controls to match closely to Morrowind, is really comfortable to play, the lack of mouse look is what made me find it hard to play Arena, good thing Daggerfall added more control customization.

As for your dungeons issue, the red dots in the fast-travel map are tombs, which is what you are most likely going to, they are small as shit. (Though note, visited dungeons, of the bigger kind, also turn red once you visited them, otherwise they are orange)
The best way to go to bigger dungeons is to get a quest from Warrior's Guild or one of the Knight guilds. They give you locations of new dungeons. Sometimes they give you lame-ass quests to go to some noble home because he has a bat infestation though, which is annoying , lame and boring. But when you progress one or two ranks you won't get those quests anymore.

You know you don't have to use xpadder to do that. Joy2Key is free and easier to use. Not sure if it works on windows 7 though.

why not join a guild and get some quests going to such big dungeons before blowing off like an ADHD kid?

Compatibility mode will make sure it works. Anyways, I might give Joy2Key a try but I'm already getting accustomed to keyboard + mouse.

Well, I just train my Illusion skill enough to join the Mage Guild. Got some awesome spells like Recall, Cure Disease, and Invisibility. My character is more of a thief and I'd rather join the thieves guild or the DBH, but I'll find them later. Daggerfall is a lot of fun so far (oh shit I actually DIE) and I foresee it sucking out quite a few hours.

Going on some after-hour shopping sprees also works and is much more profitable.

So I don't need to pick pockets? Cool.

Whats the fastest way to level my lock-picking other than training?

I actually prefer the finer MW dungeons due to them being more unique, but in terms of scale and confusion, getting lost and fucking rage DF wins against everything.

Have it cured you of your unnatural attraction to consolish HIDs as well?

Also, you missed how this game encourages playing after failure.

- I hate to admit it, but if you want to play a real video game you need a mouse and keyboard to play it.

Also, you missed how this game encourages playing after failure.

- All of the good games tend to do that.

Yes, the first big dungeon is fun. But then you relaize that every other non-MQ dungeon is excactly the same. Even Oblivion's copy-and-paste dungeons have more variety.

Not really, layouts are different and they may use different components. They are repetitive though, and often reuse large sections.

Plus spaghetti of corridors leading nowhere isn't exactly realistic dungeon design, as dungeons should generally feel as if they were fulfilling some purpose.

..Oblivion was boring because I never had to worry about a disease killing me or enemies being too powerful. Also, the smaller dungeons, while having a nice atmosphere, never set the mood that I was somewhere "dangerous".

In that case you will like Daggerfall.

I explored an entire daggerfall dungeon without finding the book of foozle I was looking for.

On a return trip I discovered it had spawned in a room a few steps beyond the entrance, inside a wall.

If you want danger, unpredictability and no level scaling in Oblivion, try the Tamriel Immersion Experience overhaul. Yes, for some reason the name contains the unholy I-word.
Of the overhauls, I think Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is the most immersive and does the most to diversify the dungeons, but it is more predictable and "logical" than T.I.E. which I think is more of an effort to bring the same sense of danger that was in Daggerfall to Oblivion.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
This thread made me start Daggerfall again. Made 2 characters and discarded them and made a third with which I'll play on now (first one got discarded because I found one of the weaknesses I took annoying, second got discarded cause I forgot buying the super useful recall spell before entering a huge dungeon).

Went through an awesome dungeon just now. It even looked pretty cool graphically in some places - opened up into a cavern, had a big pool of water in a large central chamber, some loot only accessible by levitating... awesome dungeon

It only shows how much better many of the dungeons could've been if the devs had designed more of them by hand, cause some of the layouts are just :retarded: but it's fun getting stuck and trying to find your way out by following the way you came (or the way you think you came from) only to make a wrong turn and find a new section of the dungeon you haven't explored before. Also suddently meeting a ghost or whatever that translucent spectre thing was where you didn't expect it and going all FUUUUUUU while it kills you
