Games set in the Meiji era?

I find the era a fascinating setting for video games with the the rapid modernization, the erosion of the Samurai class, and the unique look of the architecture from a combination of very traditional buildings and modern (for the time) ones.

All I can think of are Way of the Samurai 1 and 4 (not released in the US yet, nor does it have plans, but at least we aren't dependent on NoA for it and it was only released in March) with 2 taking place just before the start. The Raidou games while take place in the Taisho period (longer than normal as a result of alternate history Taisho anyways), they evoke a lot of the themes.


The next Total War expansion apparently uses this era.

I'd give fucking anything for a free-roaming Rurouni Kenshin RPG, with a paragon/renegade alignment system (and perhaps a Christian/Buddhist axis too), including an option to choose what alignment you strive for, simulating the PC's spiritual journey, which would determine the mood and ambience of every location, secondary quests, etc.
So e.g. if you play a ruthless warrior trying to find peace, there will be opportunities to mediate conflicts, study philosophy, get some friend or romantic interest who's saner than you, etc, while still drawing the fear and suspicion of anyone who knows you by your reputation. On the contrary, if you're a heroic freedom fighter who became bitter and disillusioned, most people will not notice your internal turmoil, but you'll be full of deadly surprises for them, e.g. becoming so pissed off with a crooked merchant - who invited you to dinner in hopes of manipulating your supposed naive idealism - that you burn the place down and cut down anyone who interferes.
In most RPGs, the process of changing your character's alignment, in itself, is barely commented upon, as the developers apparently don't notice that it's the most interesting part about the portrayal of personal morality in fiction, not the extremes of "good" or "evil" in themselves.

Argh. If only I was born to a half-Japanese family. I would've met the prerequisites for all kinds of obscure weeaboo shit without having to study a ridiculously complicated language as an adult.
