We are now on Steam Greenlight.

Please upvote it and show some support.

Good afternoon,

I'm happy to announce that after years of hard work I have created a game engine & IDE to create cross-platform games.

The Game Penci Engine features Windows[available now] and Mac+Linux[Coming soon] Editors, 2D Canvas rendering and physics, Tiled and Animation support, strict-mode compliant Javascript scripting, and deploys natively to HTML5, console(s) and desktop.

Game Pencil Engine Editor

You can now create 2D games with our dynamic editors which place respect on code and components.

Please show some support and pick up a copy now at https://pawbyte.itch.io/game-pencil-engine

Free & Deluxe editions are available.

I will be recompiling to Mac & Linux soon. The editor does work fully on all 3 main Operating systems.

Thank you for your time.

Hope you have you as part of the userbase.

The other engines listed above had a design that I believe all could be upgraded so I went ahead and made my vision of a game engine.

Of course you could before, but now you also have this as an option too.

What would you like to see in the engine?

Isometric view

EDIT: A bunch of easy to use engines already use top down perspective. Do something new and make it easy for me to use isometrric. Then I'll be all over it. Otherwise, I might as well use the iceblink engine or RPGMaker.

Here is a short explaination:

Unity - Top dog in the industry. Royalty / monthly subs needed for paid users. Objects use component system and are extendable via C#/JS. Ours in comparison has a pretty basic pricing model and simplifies the coding prospect of the design process more so than Unity imho.

Game Maker - Great for developing 2D games. It's pro version is about 4X our cost and studio even more so. In terms of functions and objects they are more predefined than what most coders are used to in terms of objects and functions/scripts. Our engine also comes with some nice features for the camera as well as editors ready for Mac & Linux developers.

Godot - Open source leader. It's scripting language overall is not as nice imho in comparison to our choice of JavaScript.
Love - A nice framework, just not my cup of tea.
Cocos - Same opinion as Love2D for this one.

The engine does a few things differently and it's pricing model is more liberal than the commercial engines.

^ Reminded me of something.

Recently worked on a project where the 3d modeler/animator was allowed to code the character controller, because he said he could. So what I found after I opened the code was a state machine implemented through 20 different bools.

Here is a short explaination:
"These engines are top dogs of the industry, some are even open source and free, but whatever, i like mine better.., so yeah uh, javascript is what I love, hope you do too".

Unity - Top dog in the industry. Royalty / monthly subs needed for paid users.
There's a free version that does more than your paid one.

It's pro version is about 4X our cost and studio even more so.
There's a free version that most likely does more than your paid one.

Godot - Open source leader. It's scripting language overall is not as nice imho in comparison to our choice of JavaScript.
Love - A nice framework, just not my cup of tea.
Cocos - Same opinion as Love2D for this one.
They probably do more than yours for free, and even if that weren't the case, they're certainly much more stable.

I don't see anyone of sane mind choosing your engine over any of those in the near future. If at least it was free and open source, then with a big maybe...

Rather than wait til 2017, Version 1.0 is out now for those who want to use engine, struggle with it and post suggestions. Launching an engine better than unity from the start with such a s small team is asking for St. Peter to walk on water from the USA to China.

theweirdn8 I'm sorry you feel there's money in this. I think you are deeply misguided, and deeply mistaken when you think that you're somebody's competitor.

I can only recommend that you get rid of Javascript, make a newbie-friendly version of node based visual scripting, make the engine free and open source, invest into a professional looking website and some high quality free assets that come with your engine as starter content for different genres possible with your engine, and invest into video tutorials for newbies. Then it could have some small community, but right now I think you're heading nowhere.

If I were you, I'd drop the idea of making an engine for 2d platformers, and concentrate on making this a visual novel engine instead - if done very professionally and with its own Blueprints, it could have some market share. I'd hope for $300-400 per month out of this, not more. Maybe 1k when it's on sales.

Anyway, hopefully this engine gets you some exposure and you get invited to code for actual games, and abandon this project as soon as possible, however negative this may sound.

Bester,

The engine isn't genre specific. I plan on adding more functions for things like visual novels. Also, JavaScript isn't a hard language to use. I do plan on investing in those things. It's just a mateter of trickle-down for each.

I have no plan to stop developing this product. It was just released and with there being no new platform[except Scorpio, PS 4.5 and NX] I have more time to expand the export list and become more usable for all developers. In terms of blueprint design, all of this can come in later updates. For now, it's a matter of optimizing, bug-fixing and expanding.

As the article states, just because someone is top-dog doesnt mean they control all 100% of developers.

This engine is not the sole product I'm working on. It's the core product that is used to develop my games.

It's one income of many. Also, making it open source is not completely off the table but is not part of the agenda to be like godot or libgdx.

I was saying this simply because I don't think your engine has the ability to win over people who know how to code - they can achieve more with Unity and have no reason to go with your thing. It's people who don't know how to code that you can attract, because they can't take the advantage of Unity anyway, and could potentially be lured in by easy to use Blueprints in your engine.

Both are valid points. Only time will tell how "much more unity does tho". Unity had a starting point and this one must as well. But I do not plan to go "No code neccesary" in my engine.

All engines I've seen that does that makes advanced users go away and limitation become king.

As the engine evolves over time I hope you can keep track of the news. It's Version 1.0 is less than 1 month old still.

Idiocracy
Ever heard of Unity, Game Maker, Godot, Love, Cocos, etc?

People went to Cocos because Unity was too heavy.

t's people who don't know how to code that you can attract, because they can't take the advantage of Unity anyway, and could potentially be lured in by easy to use Blueprints in your engine.

People who can't code can go to Unreal and use Blueprints.

Visual programming is an abomination IMO. Nuke it from orbit.

All engines I've seen that does that makes advanced users go away

Agree. Good luck with your engine.

The reason RPG Maker is so successful is because they come with a ton of pre-made assets and there is already a game coded just awaiting some modding.

Your does neither.

Don't like the art.
