Since epub includes javascript (at least in modern versions), I wonder how fesible having an automaticlly run version would be in standard epub format. At a minimum, linking to specific paragraphs (you can't really skim in an e-reader, with the best option being to show mini versions of multiple pages at once which to my knowledge is really only practical on a good resolution, so it would be mandatory) and rolling dice for you (trivial with even basic javascript) would be easily doable. Keeping track of your character and determining success might be a bit harder though. There's kindle/android ports, but those are dedicated apps to my knowledge rather than plain old epub files.

Creature of Havoc is a must read FF book where you play as a monster and feast on sweet hobbit flesh.
IIRC that one had an absurd number of insta-deaths

The vicious thing about it (and several other Fighting Fantasy books) was that many mistakes were not instantly fatal. You could lose just before the end because you'd missed an object or an information obtainable during the first third of the book.

IIRC the only that had this sort of bullshit was the pirate one where you would get a game over at the very end if you didn't bought an item you could have easily ignored.

I wanna read/play this.

My only experience is first 5-6 Lone Wolf books when I was a kid, so I decided to start with The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, we will see where I go from there, prolly Deathtrap Dungeon.

Any recommendations on which version I should get? I'll be reading it digitally, no buying. Any modern epubs that link themselves or something? Any other tips?

And any history lessons, both from real world and design perspective are incredibly welcome.

Most of the old FF books have been scanned and uploaded online. If you don't want to buy, just use those and an online dice generator.

Aye, thats the plan. Think I'll use real dice tho, just for the feels. Hell, I even think Ill take notes by hand.

I was just curious of releases and such stuff, since people mentioned "original" art and so on.

What would be a good source on reading the history of the medium? Very roots especially.

Wikipedia (lul, I know, I'm noob) mentions something called "Adventures of You" series as the earliest example of the format. That thing any good, or just a historical artifact?

Yes so you would be aware by now you get 2 types of FF books that have been converted to digital PC games

You get the direct translation which is almost identical to the original books around narrative and choices and they include many of the original books created on popularity and what fans ask for

Then you get translations of a few specific books which include different encounters and ways to complete the main quest and of course they have the original art and similar themes like the maze and cyclops in Warlock of Firetop Mountain

I played all these more advanced conversions and they excellent and highly recommended, its like playing the original books but with improved mechanics

And these are ones I played

https://store.steampowered.com/app/324740/The_Warlock_of_Firetop_Mountain/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/496340/Fighting_Fantasy_Legends/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/824760/Deathtrap_Dungeon_Trilogy/
But the best PC conversion was the Sorcery books, all the original art and choices but extra and different ways to complete the game because the main difference with the PC games is they not as linear and you can go back if you get things wrong or die

Finally sat down and started Warlock of Firetop Mountain. Lovely stuff.

Two quesitons.

First, "Fighting each opponent in turn" - what exactly does this mean? Do I attack one, and they both attack me? Or how? Not really getting it.

Second - regarding inventory management - do i need to write that I'm carrying a regular sword, leather armor, backpack and a lantern on inventory sheet? Plus, am I even carrying a shield? Intro says so, but shield isnt mentioned when inventory rules are explained.

You roll against both opponents. If you succeeded in the roll, you deal damage to your target and dodge the other opponent's attack, dealing no damage.

Just something else, last week I played House of Hell and Forest of Doom. These are the FF Classic PC books and they exactly the same as the original books with the addition of save\restore and a very convenient auto-map map which really helped in House of Hell because its hard

It was such a worthwhile nostalgic experience, it brought back good memories and they include the illustrations in colour or original. I ended up buying Creature of Havoc and Citadel of Chaos which I will play later

I really appreciated the updated versions around Sorcery and Warlock that you playing but its definitely worth playing the FF Classics as well

ty for info; FF classic seem good, and I eyed it for a while - but it doesnt seem like they will be bringing all of the books to the game, and I figured, if I'm gonna map some of them, why not map all of them. Having great fun with drawing maps atm lol. Yesterday was Colossal Cave Adventure 350, today Warlock of Firetop Mountain, and tomorrow, who knows? Perhaps Wizardry?

You make one attack roll only no matter how many goblins there are. Each goblin makes an individual attack roll against you. Then compare the 3 results.

Its a good question and its asked to the developers all the time, they are a small studio and they release each book in stages because of resources

I am waiting for Scorpion Swamp, thats one of my favourite books

I never played FF books before. Played 1-4 Lone Wolf as a kid, and I must say, this seems even better.

I'm still at the start, i like how it feels and looks, but the beginning is quite linear, and seems to consist of "you walk through corridor, do you wanna open the door or continue?"

Sorry for bothering you, I'm incredibly stupid, and accustomed to modern board gaming rules where e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g must be spelled out. By compare 3 results, you mean Calculate your skill + your only roll vs goblin #1 skill + roll, then use your skill + your only roll vs goblin #2 skill + roll?

There is no addition or so on, you fight them separately, but with the same roll?

Yes. Except you can only deal damage to one target even if your roll beats both goblins. There is fate dice as well, but I think you understand that already.

Some books have more complicated rules like critical strikes and magic but I think WFM uses the most basic variant.
