When you're playing an "action rpg" that has lots of combat and doesn't even require you to have much involvement from the play outside of getting high level gear, it isn't very good.

They've had this exact same problem in the, gothic 2, gothic 3, risen & elex.

God of War is just as stat driven as Elex.

For the record, smooth controls and fluid animations are not mutually exclusive with character stats. PB doesn't have any excuse.

Exactly. If no skill is involved and stats/gear is all that matters, then why bother even making an action RPG?

To take a different approach to making an action RPG? Just throwing it out there. But I forgot we all want homogenization of every genre and all games to be the same with no real choices in the marketplace. My bad.

Dark souls is actually good and so is its combat you can't say the same for elex, especially not the combat because piranha can't into combat and have been remaking gothic combat (shit) in all their games

The combat is good in ELEX but it's not Dark Souls combat and the game is not designed to be played that way. ELEX's combat is quite fun and serves its purpose well. I played as a magic user and really enjoyed it.
No elex combat isn't good, it's at best tolerable like the gothic games. That's why you learn to ignore it until the game makes you engage in it, not really because it's hard in the beginning hours.

There are many games harder than this shit that are received far better than the mainstream press since their opinion is what we're discussing anyway.
you have no idea what you're talking about

Isn't Gothic based on patterns too? Wolves had their patterns, orcs theirs, and so on. You could have memorized them and use even lower level gear to beat them. Since when the fuck do people not like gear making a difference. Hell, even in Dark Souls gear matters. Sure, you can beat the game naked, but it will take you much longer and will be much harder than it's supposed to be. Try to gear up and get to the first zone again. You'll destroy every enemy easily and won't take almost any damage.

Now Elex combat ain't great, that's for sure, but it's servicable enough that you don't have to blame the combat system if you die somewhere. It's pretty much always your own fault.

It is (and so is piranhas games and most action games), that retard that pointed out that dark souls is about patterns either doesn't realize that or didn't play these games

When your combat isn't good in the first place and gear doesn't make it better, just easier. That's piranha bytes combat in a nutshell.

It's actually funny because I've done this before in the game.

Taking advantage of the fact that he can momentarily stun lock orcs with your weapons isn't that skillful.

They're low skilled games, you go and get "good" gear and beat on dumb enemies. This isn't just elex, this is piranha game since gothic.
The combat in elex does require some skill on the part of the player, you cant just stand there spamming attack and kill everything left and right ,you'll get rekt .You have to chain attacks in order to perform a special attack and you have to time your rolls and even use jetpack in some situations to avoid taking damage.

Witcher's combat is literally press button so your guy flies to the enemy and kills it. It definitely holds your hand, nevermind the 'vision' that paints bright red footsteps to solve any/every quest that involves 'investigation'.

Let me guess... you watched it on Youtube?

Creatures only have one attack animation. All you need to do is learn to dodge that one attack, and counterattack until your stamina is depleted. A child could master Elex's combat.

Most creatures have at least 2 different attack animations.

Not that it makes huge difference.

In what game does gear make the combat "better"?
Monster hunter. Devil may cry. Ninja gaiden. Etc.

Lol, there's a video of that happening but I won't use it to shit on the game too hard.

In what way?
Have you played any of those games?

No. Is that somehow relevant to the question?

On second thought, I have played some of DMC. Didn't care for it.
Of course. The gear you use to play in those games will change how you play the game which is to say the experience will far better than in any PB game

No, I played and beat all three games, the first two twice.

"Muh skill-based gameplay!"

Even if you can do that, and you can, even in ELEX, let's be honest - the developers did not intend you to play that way. Sure, it can be done. You can take an hour or two to slowly whittle away the health of a troll in ELEX at level 1. But what fun is that? That is sort of exploiting their system, it's not by design. Those combat maneuvers are meant to be used when you have better gear and stats, so you can have a "normal" battle like in any action RPG. So even while you can do those things, the games are not designed to be played that way and it's pretty obvious to anyone with a brain, especially when you see the health going down 1/100 every time your attack lands.

The difficulty in Dark Souls is also different. You learn patterns and the game promotes the fact you'll die a lot, but when you learn the patterns you succeed. ELEX is a whole different beast, with character skill trumping stick skills or pattern-learning, and gamers just aren't familiar with a game where for the first dozen or two hours you are completely weak and can't fight really anything besides tiny things. They expect an action RPG to be where you can beat a human opponent right away, or don't have to run away from tougher encounters (running away? Psh, what's that?) Totally different ballgame with ELEX.
No there are patterns to mobs attacking in Elex as well. You even have to combo physical attacks to deal large amounts of damage which falls under the "stick skills" category. What the hell are you talking about when you say it relies on more character skill?

ELEX's combat is quite fun and serves its purpose well. I played as a magic user and really enjoyed it.
