Which will be better and why?

Seriously, I do not have much time and am wondering which one I should play.

No one can really answer this yet, as no one has really played either.

As a big fan of both From Software and Piranha Bytes - and as someone who is pretty certain he'll enjoy both a lot - I felt a similar hesitation for a moment, but then the release dates decided for me.

Elden Ring first, then ELEX 2 immediately after I'm done with that. It's going to be an amazing couple months of gaming.

Also, it's absolutely insane that THQ Nordic/PB decided to release ELEX 2 a week after Elden Ring. They should have pushed it off a month or two. It's going to be a huge blow to potential sales.

To be fair, Dark Souls 1 released very close to Skyrim, and it was a break out hit so who knows?

Elden Ring will most certainly have better combat, and Elex will have better quests, when it comes to exploration I cannot be sure since it's the first time Fromsoft has ever done something in this scale but from what I saw it looks pretty solid, so I'll guess they'll be on par with each other in this aspect. Elden Ring might end up being the better game technically, but I'll probably end up liking Elex 2 more despite of its inevitable jankiness.

Elex 2 story will be cheesy sci-fi with lots of dialogue. Elden Ring story will be cheesy fantasy and will largely consist of cryptic notes in item descriptions.

Elex 2 will offer you moral choices. Elden Ring might offer one or a handful.

Elden Ring will almost certainly have tighter combat if that means anything to you.

In both of them, you will die a lot. In Elex 2 you might lose some progress when that happens. In Elden Ring you might lose some progress too, but the Elden Ring philosophy is that dying is fine, so relax.

If you don't have much time, I'm guessing Elex 2 will require fewer potential hours of gameplay before you run out of worlds to conquer. I could be wrong.

Elden Ring looks like better graphics, so I'm giving that a try.

While I hope you are right in this optimism, things are a lot different than they were back then. And the fact that both Elden Ring and ELEX 2 are 3rd person action RPGs with weighty, lethal combat is another problem with such a close release date. I have no doubt that regular fans of PB such as myself will be buying the game day one regardless. I'm just saying, any newcomers they were hoping to bring into the fold are going to have a major distraction with Elden Ring, and I have no doubt that they are going to lose a lot of curiosity sales because of that.

To be even fairer, every game released in the last 10 years was released very close to Skyrim.

Dark Souls and other games of that type (and Elden Ring) by the looks of it are essentially about unique monsters rather than exploration per se. Or anything else.

Even fighting is really secondary, compared to bosses and unnamed bosses being something you intrinsically wanna look at.

Basically the world has to look very large and very strange but the primary emphasis is not really about character development or story or fighting but it's really just a bunch of unrelated boss battles.

To some degree the old Serious Sam games or even the on-rails House of the Dead were about "big" cool bosses to meet. That genre.

Whereas a role playing game might even be best without *any* boss battles. Like recently say Dying Light 2 would be better without the couple of boring boss fights. Gothic 2 fights with the dragons are the least interesting parts of that game ...

*So it's about which genre you prefer more - Dark Souls is ostensibly about gameplay being tight but it's really just as good or bad as how much interesting bosses matter to you compared to the rest.*

Including graphics, because right now anybody (Yes, even you!) can make the current gen game with Unreal 5 or a proprietary engine look on par with Naughty Dog or the Horizon game that is out. Just let the modeler feel free to use 45K polys or more for refactored models while raw models are 4GB. Rule of thumb.

My bet is easily on Elex 2. I just realized that bosses are best watched on Youtube Let's Plays. (Wrong thread? Trigger Codex with a statement?) Good bosses do make superior marketing material.

I'm getting both and I'm going to keep the ELEX GOTY meme going forever even if it's complete shit.

I'll probably have more fun with Elden Ring though, unless they severely diminished the difficulty to make it playable for the "games journalists".

Elden Ring is a game made for men. Elex is for ladyboys. Even the name is gay.

I think ELEX 2 will be better overall, if Piranha Bytes don't shit the bed and produce something like Risen 2 or Gothic 3.

That's simply because ELEX 2 is a true full fledged RPG, with substantial combat, dialogue and exploration. When done well, those games are the absolute best gaming has to offer.

Elden Ring, on the other hand, will be a more limited experience most likely, with much more emphasis on combat. I hope From Software expands on that compared to their previous games, and introduces more dialogue and exploration, but given their current track record, that's what it looks like. Now they do this very well, but even at its best, the combat oriented RPG will always pale in comparison to the full RPG.
