You can understand intellectually what they were attempting and achieved by reading, seeing results and the background stuff without actually having played it much and without being any good at it. You can understand that people like games that do this and agree its a good feature and implement it... while sucking at actually using it properly.
I disagree that you'd understand it fully - or sufficiently - without first hand experience. Perhaps not be an expert, but especially given how RPGs are not exactly difficult games to finish, they should have a rudimentary skill level by the end of the game.

You may understand it logically but it won't factor into your intuition, and design is just as much about logic as it is about intuiting how different mechanics will interface with one another. You may understand the reasons and framework why other people like or dislike a feature, but you won't be able to come up with your own conclusions and think outside of the box, creating not even necessarily new mechanics but new combinations of mechanics that work together differently.

What is difficult for one person is easier for another. IE I can't play shooters at all because I have sucky reflexes and such. On the other hand give me a Turn based game against the same people and odds are good I win.

And different people have different skills. As long as everyone understands the skills that people have on the team, and defer to that experience and skill, that means that it can be used. Like I don't expect Chris Avellone to write a good combat system. Its not his skill set or what he's good at. Providing a general vision, writing and setting are more what I expect from him. On the other hand I expect Tim Cain to be good at combat on the same team and help heavily contribute to that.

Now if they lack fundamental understanding of the area they are working on and can't study or work on that wihtin a game that is a different issue.

I'm afraid all these new let's plays due to be coming out are too close to the deadline to do much good.

I hope Larian adds the unobtainable stretch goals anyway, it can only make the game better in the long run which (might) equate to more sales when they release. That's a risk they have to take upon themselves, unfortunately.

No SCO, Dragon Commander is slated for release at June. Original Sin is sometime in the late '13, I believe.

Clearly. If Sawyer didn't design it, the mere act of playing a game requires you to commit seppuku to redeem your tainted honor.

That blog post doesn't touch on "saving lives" -- just that people found comfort in playing the games, similar to books or theater. Makes perfect sense to me -- plenty of people who do not find comfort in the world seek some form of escapism from it, and RPGs offer a deeper escape than some other genres.

Yes, Larian have said, that Original Sin will be released in late '13. As for Dragon Commander, according to GOG, the release date will be July 2.

Obsidian and Bioware people have also talked about receiving "ur game saved my life" letters. Unsurprising that people who hate their lives would rather get lost in someone else's, but does it have to be in such a banal world?

Have you ever done anything in your life that made unknown people come up to you and say "Thank you for this"? If so, you would know how this feels. The first time I got an email that "thanked" me for the support and all, I did not know what to say. I will not go into details, but that guy was in a pretty bad place, and got comfort from playing games. I don't care if he was playing Beyond Divinity or Call of Duty. We too often forget that to some, a game means more than mere entertainment. I know you're playing a character here and you have to be a bit of an ass, but I do believe there must be some humanity in your IRL self to realize that books/theatre/movies/games can indeed help people. If you had ever received a mail like that, which made you realize you're doing more than simply going to work every day, you'd probably understand. It only happens once a year or so, but it does give you a morale boost. It doesn't make us feel better about ourselves, but it does make our job or industry feel more important than it did the day before.
