Season starting today seems to have ripped off Last Epoch ideas about loot. It lets you add mods to found items (that only drop with 3 mods now) and even has greater affixes that are drop only

Ok after playing new season for few days now I must say so far this is pretty cool.
They fixed 3 important things.
1. Made overland fights fun and cool with changes to helltides. There are huge waves of enemies there now as well as new bosses and it is harder than before. I hate dungeons in D4 and this lets me ignore them somewhat (unfortunatelly you still need to farm glyph XP but they made that faster as well)
2. Loot changes are really good. They removed most stupid mods and what is left are mostly useful. They reduced amount of drops a bit and made it unimportant to look at every piece of yellow loot to find upgrades. Yellow drops with 2 mods, legendary with 3 and you can craft one more mod on top of both. You need to find crafting recipes for that. So basically unless rare is a much better base weapon you sell or scrap them all and just check orange items to see if they are good candidate for adding more mods. But they made adding sockets much harder and it should not be done until lvl 100. I am yet on WT3 but on WT4 I will be able to add two mods and then do Masterworking which I do not know if it works like before.
3. Lots of UI and QoL updates. They even moved often used traders in towns to be close to each other. You can ride and boost your horse in towns. Using blacksmith to scrap legendary automatically saves the Aspect if it is new or better than version you already have and stuff like that.

Bad is that servers are bad during this first weekend with random disconnects, not being able to change zones, some mechanics not working because of server issues..

Itemization is horrible, the most boring streamlined shit possible. Might as well leave only the special effects and a power number.
The "stupid" mods were the interesting ones and they should have been fixed, more added. If/when it was needed add targeting options through craft.

The game had 2 areas with depth potential, those mods and the glyph board. One is gone now and they haven't done anything interesting with the glyph board in 4 seasons so it's probably next on the choping block.

Helltides would be nice if singleplayer. Atm gameplay in them is the worst of what MMO gameplay has to offer.

It is true that it is streamlined but so was D1 and D2 by that metric.

I am over crazy loot hunting that PoE has. I am no longer enjoying that shit and I never really did as I just wanted another D2 like game, not what PoE turned into.
D4 feels a lot like Last Epoch now but better.
You pick up some loot, you tweak it a bit in city and then go to kill more enemies in fun Helltides.

I am playing Druid again, I went around Spirit issues by not using any Core skills. I am using all 3 Companions, Earthen Bullwark that I almost got to last as long as its cooldown (and it will get better over time as I get better loot) and Werewolf Poison Bite with aspect that reduces its cooldown with each infected target.
I am using fastest basic attack, Werewolf one that also has 50% base lucky hit chance and Druid animal ability where if you crit while lucky striking you can refresh all companion skill cooldowns. Also using Aspect that makes basic attack attack even faster and gives me movespeed as well and when I spend 2s in Werewolf form I get 30% and all my companions get 60% attack speed. And of course aspect that gives me 15% damage reduction while in Werewolf form. I just lose that form when I cast companions skills for less than 1 s and each switch also gives me Fortiy so I got that shit up all the time as well. Character is super tanky, active ability for Wolves (that are werewolves because of the aspect) one shots many bosses and one shots almost all Elites and AoE options are decent and I never run out of mana/spirit which was most irritating part of the caster druid.
Only problem is since I am playing on controller I can miss my Raven AoE attack and Rabid Bite can also miss targets and Poison Creeper has a long cooldown and then I am out of AoE attacks until Refresh Companions abilities kicks in :D
Werewolves do crazy good damage even with their passive attack but they do not have AoE and their AI is stupid and stands around too much.

Character is all about speed, I am moving fast and attacking fast with high crit and lucky strike chance to refresh my Companion skills often. I got 3 AoE skills and one killer single target one and one Defensive one that is up 75% of the time and gives me unstoppable while active.

I have not enjoyed making my own character like this since early POE days before they added all the shit into the game and ruined it.

I've started playing necromancer 2 days ago, lvl24, II word difficulty. Itemization is shit, it is insulting my intelligence. Lvl scalling is shit, killing any sense of progression and ruining a lot of fun.

However skellies go clank clack, mages shoot rainbow bolts and corpse explosion go boom boom. I have not lost a single HP during this playthrough.

It was never hard, especially not for Necro. Switch to WT3 and go straight for Helltide to get some challenge (it lasts until you get some decent Sacred gear).
Also Minion Necro is strongest character in current game. Play Rogue if you want some challenge.
Also mods on items seem to also be dependent on level of the gear that is dropping. I am in WT4 now and mod pool seems to have things I have not seen before

I think I have to beat campaign first to increase difficulty. So far it is fun, mindless autobattler.

Yes. You can access TW3 once you finish the campaign. Game tells you it is lvl 50 content but you can easily do it at lvl 40 and probably even less with Necro.
Same for later accessing WT4, it is officially lvl 70 content but I did it at lvl 64 or so with my companion Druid.

I stopped playing last year about half way through the campaign since leveling up didn’t really seem ‘fun’. If I wanted to try the new season do I need to complete the campaign to do so? Or can I just jump in similar to D3?

You need to complete the campaign once per account after that you can skip it (iirc, I might be wrong on having to complete it).

You can skip the campaign without beating it first for sure. The problem is that you probably can't get to tier 3 so it's kind of pointless to be able to skip.

What the fuck are the "seasons" all about. Still don't get it. I played this on release and thought it was the usual mindless fun you get with ARPGs, is there a reason to come back to it now?

Best case scenario: continued support and new content. Worst case scenario: time limited content designed to prey on the fear of missing out and drain wallets. Since this is a blizzard cash shop game I am assuming the latter.

I'm talking about getting the skip campaign options on new chars.
