How would you rate this game from 1 to 10?
I haven't finished it yet (only made it to Boreal Valley thus far) but based on what I've seen so far I'd give it a 8/10.

I believe Dark Souls 3 was being worked on before Miyazaki became President, so presumably he didn't want to just scrap all the work they'd done. Had Miyazaki been President this whole time, we probably would have gotten two completely different games instead of Dark Souls 2 and 3.
Is it known how much Kadokawa intends to interfere in From Software's operations? Does Miyazaki actually have creative freedom now that he heads From Software, or will Kadokawa insist on pumping out more Dark Souls clones, even if under a different name? For that matter, Kadokawa reached an agreement to purchase From Software only days after the release of Dark Souls 2 in 2014, and finalized the deal a month later, so what effect did it have on the decision to develop Dark Souls 3 rather than something more of a departure in the way that Bloodborne was to Dark Souls and Dark Souls had been to Demon's Souls?

I should not be having this much trouble with the dancer of the boreal valley, but I've been stuck on him for the past few days now. He's the only boss that makes me rage-quit after a few attempts.

Having finished my second playthrough with the intent of doing things in as different of an order as possible, it's pretty clear just how half-assed the sequence breaking is. For one, even if you kill Emma and Dancer (and Dragonslayer Armor, Oceiros and Champion Gundyr, in my case) before killing all the Lords of Cinder, you'll still get her dialogue and be teleported to the room, which makes no fucking sense if she's dead. Second thing is at the entrance to the Grand Archive, the door is closed, but when you kill the three Lords, a key magically appears on a body next to the bonfire. If I had actually done all this without knowing the expected sequence, I'd be looking all over for the Archive key.

That big yellow magic barrier that blocks your way to Dukes Archives did not bother you in DS1 ?
The key to Grand Archives appears on Black Hand Gotthard body. NPC that you can summon to fight Abyss watchers/Pontiff. Supposedly he is a guy that was loyal guard to lothric royal family but noticed how fucked up everything is there and tries to escape and helps you.

No way to know. Miyazaki did announce that they'd be moving on to a new IP, but he's most likely being pressured to keep making Dark Souls sequels by Bamco and Kadokawa.

IMO they should give Yui Tanimura his own team and have him work on a new Souls (not Dark Souls IV, but something similar with Souls in the title) while Miyazaki works on a new IP.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
will Kadokawa insist on pumping out more Dark Souls clones

No publicly traded company can afford to pass on a sequel of a highly successful product, due to shareholders calling for phat lootz. So it's almost certain Souls games will go on as long as people buy them.

Whether or not Kadokawa will force From to make specifically more Dark Souls, who knows. We know From is developing a new IP, they'll make more Armored Core and they'll make two DLC for DS3. Apart from that it's anybody's guess.

Kadokawa influence can be positive too though, maybe they'll release vastly improved (and fully finished) DS1 Ultimate Edition or some such that Miyazaki alone would never do if it was up to him. Maybe we'll even see Demon's Souls PS4 remaster or even PC version.

I can't fucking stand this apologetic Miyazaki bullshit. When will you people learn that he's a hack? Just like Kojima. Community made all the Team A/B bullshit just to excuse what sorry state DS2 was. Now DS3 bitch slapped them in the face and you make new excuses?

I hang out in some developer IRC channels and one of them is frequented by a technical artist who works at From. Guess what? There's no team A/B, just different chinese outsourcers. Miyazaki gets the final call about everything even though he himself is responsible only for writing the story. Just like he did in DS2. The "engine" is 20 years of legacy tech, theres no editors, just 3dsmax, photoshop and hand edited scripts and shaders. Leads at From refuse to learn and the company is full of incompetence. What you see is what you get, there's no conspiracy behind it, stop making up shitty excuses.

From reddit:

Kick power scales with right hand weapon reinforcement!

Took a +0 Greatsword and kicked a standard high-wall hollows wooden shield, took two kicks to break his guard. Switched to a +10 Greatsword and only needed one kick to break the hollows guard. No ring boosting gear was used. Just thought it was an interesting find.

Also worked with smaller weapons I tested, +0 brigand twindaggers took two kicks, +8 took one kick. Probably old news, but for people that didn't know, TIL!

Everything makes perfect sense. No comment.

?? DS is one of the best souls games. Sure it isn't perfect but i take DS3 level and monster design over DS2 garbage every day

There's no team A/B, just different chinese outsourcers.

There is actually. Most of people who worked on DS1 went to create BB only few people from DS1 team went to make DS2.
Outsourcing is industry standard and it is mostly done for asset creation.

Miyazaki gets the final call about everything even though he himself is responsible only for writing the story.

And level design.
Miyazaki getting final call means those are "HIS" games as he is the one who does what he wants with it. By that if someone makes level he can go and say " i don't like it, design me 5 more we will see which i will like"
Which is why DS2 isn't "HIS" game because aside from early lore stuff he didn't work on it and released his "final call" to someone else. He even outright states this in one of his interviews.

Just like he did in DS2. The "engine" is 20 years of legacy tech, theres no editors, just 3dsmax, photoshop and hand edited scripts and shaders.

What ? What does editor has to do with engine capability ? For game like DS creating Skyrim esque toolset doesn't make any sense literally as they don't reuse scripts a lot and fan created content wouldn't really work in DS game.

Cowboy Moment "you couldn't pancake enemies with heavy weapons in ds2"

dude, did you never 2hand a greathammer?

dint need a greathamma, the Gatsu sword pancaked enemies with its r1-r1 just fine
which is now its weapon art in ds3 i think

Not as good as the greathammers (some enemies could take both hits, a single 2h R2 from greathammer however worked -- even on the reindeers in horse-cock alley), but sure whatever. Point is that weapons DID pancake.

A review for the game, about half of it consists of my thoughts on it: http://thegameslashers.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/dark-souls-iii-review.html

Very good review, agreed on almost everything, except the last paragraph. I don't think the IP went out with a boom, at least not in vanilla. But just as with DS2 if the DLCs are good fans will be forgiving.

Thanks. It was the most consistent Souls experience for me, and that's why I ended my part of the review on that note.

As promised, toro.

Dark Souls 3 is the best cause ... Miyazaki cannot do anything wrong and Fashion Souls.

You are a delusional fanboi. The review is garbage.

:bravo:

Yep, I stand corrected. I was mostly thinking of greatswords, and somehow thought that greathammers did the same thing where you'd just stagger with the overhead swing and knock back with R2. I'm pretty sure that Greatsword R1 didn't pancake anything though, only attack from that moveset that pancakes is the jump attack if I recall correctly.

On that note, maybe I'll replay DS2 now, this time with Scholar, and see how the combat stacks up in direct comparison to DS3.

I don't remember Gatsu sword pancaking, but it's 2h R2 does send them flying which accomplishes the same thing (knock enemy down, give you chance to breath.)

Given how effective strike damage is on many of the armored knight-bosses, the great hammers are an ideal weapon for many cases and can one-shot many otherwise 'strong big' enemies like the old knights -- the craftsman's hammer outshines them when you need to hit fast and have time to dodge with hits higher counter rating, but being able to do over 1k damage in a single attack with a +5 dragon tooth or +10 great club with 40 str is just a huge benefit.

I still haven't had much of a chance to really play DS3 past the 5 hour mark given how it runs on my comp, but so far I am not seeing it being THE BEST -- but that may also be because I have like 1500+ hours in DS1/DS2 now and so my view of what is fresh and exciting is just... nonexistent in the souls formula.

Gatsu sword will pancake with the vertical R2 attacks- the second one in the combo or when used after a roll.

One of the biggest advantages I'm seeing from great hammers (the greatswords not so much) is they will stagger bosses and minibosses way more often. You can easily go through an entire boss fight using an estoc without staggering a fucker, but the great clubs will often bring them to their knees every ~3 swings. It's very nice having a guaranteed breather to recover stamina, chug an estus, reposition, etc.

Have had terrible luck on my str run, haven't gotten any decent str weapons to drop early, no black knight weapons, no winged halberd, not even a great axe. Been using the large club and the guts sword. The sword is handy for certain kinds of enemies, it has good tracking and range on the overhead swing, and it wrecked the shit out of the watchers.

The Greatsword is really great when fully upgraded, but wasn't much to hoot about in the interim. I had a lot of success with it fighting invaders, because the sheer reach can catch them rolling away.

This game shits so much on mages. I had done everything up to the Yhrom and Aldrich fights, it wasn't intentional I just had progressed in both areas and suddenly I had two boss fights. I want to beat all bosses alone, so fighting them was just fucking frustrating. The game basically forces you to play as a strength/dex melee build in almost all bosses, and use specific damaging weapons or specific gimmicks. Build progression simply gets invalidated. Add to that the completely shitty spells you have up to now and the fact that you can't even use int scaling weapons because they are very resistant to magic and you're simply fucked as a sorcerer.

I must have fought Aldrich at least 15 times before I killed him, I almost killed him a couple of times, but the way shit is you just have to be lucky. At some point I just said fuck it, I'll summon a heavy sunbro to tank. I mean I fought the battle with Anri previously and it was a piece of cake. The guy fucking sucked and got killed in seconds  I couldn't believe it. So I just forgot about summons and eventually killed him myself with a shitty fire weapon, but man, what crap. As for Yhrom, suddenly Siegward appeared and almost killed him, but I said to myself, no man, let's do it solo. It was a mistake  so eventually I just used the gimmick sword to kill him.

After so much fun in the dungeons and in Illyth, these two fights just took all the fun away.
