B: Avowed? Obviously a truckload of issues, but none related to engine - in the technical department, the game is fine. It's the game design & writing that's trash.
They’d have to sacrifice the ambitions of building a Skyrim-style map where players could walk for hours and still not see everything. But for both technological and logistical reasons, that was proving to be an impossible quest.
Engines don't make games bad - bad devs and/or bad management does.

This is all they have to work with.

"It's much harder and more complicated to make even a AA game now than it was 10 years ago" - Josh Sawyer. Is that really solely because all the competent people burned out and no one replaced them?

Partly.
But also because production standards have risen by such an insane margin (for high-end productions) that everything outside of the purely mechanic design & writing department takes drastically longer.
Just take animations and how perfect they have to be nowadays as compared to what people were happy with a decade ago (and still mostly are for smaller productions).

The devs are currently doing a livestream with German gaming magazine GameStar, and now I'm utterly amazed how much Björn Pankratz himself looks like a character from Gothic. :-D
