the game doesn't require you to have any optimal build
Its not a hard game, true. Whats your point?

Get two free levels into it.
They arent free, they cost you a tag.

So it's far from being that rigid.
Its rigid in the sense that every point of exp lost is lost, especially when it comes to combat/talking. Its silly when you take into account its a small game with a few branching paths by the end. Its baffling that it was done this way when you could have gone either with a traditional approach that gives you generic xp and you choose what to spend it on. What does this add to the game?

I find what the game offers lacking in every area but graphics in some places, Ive found some very nice looking areas even though it all feels lifeless in a way that fallout didnt in 1997.

AoD was exactly like this. I don't know why one would expect differently.

Elhoim I thought you argentinians were all smart people with good taste. I guess I was wrong.

AoD divided exp in two types, combat and non combat, and you chose how to spend it, it also offered you training at certain points in the story based on choices and allegiances. It was miles better than this.

You ugly, disgusting shill.

There is a lot of trainers throughout the game, many available right off the bat. You can even get feats that improve your character combat capabilities if you have enough science skills, kill specific critters(hypnofrog mutations) or take decisions throughout the game(like +initiative if you pick enough bonus initiative choices during pre-combat dialogues) - you can even influence your companions builds that way(like Faythe going Assassin or Thief).

Only difference is that instead of killing everyone with an axe and then increasing your sword skill, here you have to kill people with a sword to get better at it. But that everyone knew even before the game was released since it was announced by the developers that it was going to use a learn-by-doing system.

Gated content dependent on character build and limited XP have always been core mechanics of ITS games. In AoD I'd say it was even worse because it was a single character game. Here you have a full party of up to 4 companions + PC. Bitching about not being able to open a door later on because you didn't open that chest on chapter 1 and then saying AoD was better because you could manually allocate points is almost down syndrome levels of retardation.

They give skill xp, not points.

They both fall under bladed, funnily enough. Also another complaint I have. Its a futuristic setting and you are swinging a stick, why even have bladed and blunt? Whats the fucking point of this. You have to pick your weapon and you stick with it through the whole game, only improving the tier as they become available. Like at the very least if you had a free choice between bladed and blunt at any point, you would get some depth and player decision making "Ill go into this fight with the blunt weapon because they have highly armored opponents and I want to take them out fast" or "Ill go with bladed because Im retarded and VD hates blades and makes them awful in each game."
Its the same shit with ranged weapons, like why not make a single aim skill? What is gained by hyper specializing in weapons that are essentially very similar in handling? You are just making it so that your character will play the exact same from start to finish, instead of being able to adapt to encounters based on loot previously acquired and strategy.

everyone knew even before the game was released since it was announced by the developers that the game was going to use a learn-by-doing system.
Whatever the developers say doesnt matter, its not as if its impossible to do learn by doing well, you just dont go with it in a game with limited opportunities, because it goes against the whole point of learn by doing systems. They exist to keep the player playing, but this game has limited handcrafted content (Which I applaud), but learn by doing is just not the right approach for that.

In AoD I'd say it was even worse because it was a single character game.
AoD is a different game, there were plenty of things I didnt like about it, but when it came to system design it was well done (Even though it was needlessly restrictive, like this one)

Bitching about not being able to open a door later on because you didn't open that chest on chapter 1 and then saying AoD was better because you could manually allocate points is almost down syndrome levels of retardation.
These are two different things you fucking moron. The first thing, bitching about not being able to open a door because you didnt open a chest is a valid criticism.

As for the second point, what are you talking about you imbecile? AoD was better because point allocation meant that you had more freedom in choices through the game, it wasnt ideal, but it was better than this.

it's....not that hard, right?
Mechanics and difficulty are two different things. One thing is what you are making your player do, the other is how much pressure there is if they dont do it right. I categorically despise what this game makes me do. For example I am playing a melee character, I have never not used power attack, aim head or knockdown, why? Because they have a 15% extra chance to crit, every crit increases your crit experience, so you want to crit as much as you can so you get more experience to your crit skill. The moment I got basher the only attack I ever did was knockdown,, because thats effectively 20% extra crit exp per encounter.

Do I need this to win? Who fucking cares, you are playing a game to beat it, so you play effectively. Its why the autistic crowd here hoards shit. Even if they are playing with a suboptimal class they are going to play that class right.

You cannot possibly think the "The game is so easy, you do not need to play it well" is a good argument to make.

post your char and we'll give you feedback.
I am aware I am the only Codexer who isn't instantly perfect at every game on the first try, please forgive my lack of psychic powers.

Though in this case my build is fine, it's Evan and Jed who are pissing me off, missing everything, going last, and getting killed in the first round.

idk, I had three guys run up to Evan; with his 5 Rifle skill his hit rate is 5%. Five whole percent. These were just random unnamed 'thugs'. I'm sure there is some moon logic here about ARs being bad in close quarters, despite him having a clear short-stock carbine-style gun.

I immediately thought of these types of videos:

Hey bros, don't you know he only has a 5% hit chance? Why you running dawgs??

I just imagine some urbanite, pasty-faced coder, living in an apartment he shares with 3 adjunct PHDs (making $7.25/hour) plus a family from Honduras, who has never touched a firearm in real life or a videogame, sipping his soymilk and cooking his Beyond Meat insect burger on a hotplate, responding to a home defense reddit forum: "ACTUALLY, an AR-15 is a long range gun, it is useless for defense."

The comment that this is a reloading simulator doesn't even come from me though, that was from the steam forums. The devs said you weren't meant to win fights on the first try, and even that stats and levels weren't important to combat (Again, their words). You were supposed to use items and consumables to win.

I realized I could use the stack of cash I started with to buy grenades, and then use those grenades to win the fights, and that indeed seems to be the meta going round the forums, and that yes, Germany did have a better trained army in WW2, but the US economy won the war, and that's certainly a valid way to make a videogame. But I have always preferred more of the "Musashi carving a bokken from a boat oar to win a duel" style of combat. Maybe that's just me.

so first, it was you who complained about having to grind for exp on skills, and now here on combat. of course you are using the abilities that are most effective for your build, what's strange about that? other people here were complaing about always aiming for legs! i don't see the logic here. you got mechanics, figure them out and behave accordingly. if you have any other character, you will do different things.

"One thing is what you are making your player do, the other is how much pressure there is if they dont do it right. I categorically despise what this game makes me do."

if you want to play games that let you do what you want, EVERY other game provides this wish fulfillment.

I am rather enjoying the game. I think the combat is fun and it is nice to build characters. Playing it as a kind of Dungeon Rats after the first completion.

Its the same fucking thing, its experience and how you are encouraged to max it.
what's strange about that?
A healthy system would encourage different tactics depending on the encounter and enemy composition, this locks you into a thing. Fallout, in 1997, understood that every weapon category needed to have different loadout options, so the combat had some variance.

i don't see the logic here
Because you dont want to see, or because you arent knowledgeable enough to.

if you want to play games that let you do what you want, EVERY other game provides this wish fulfillment.
You are an imbecile and a peasant. A game with tactical combat should encourage a tactical approach to said combat. This game does the opposite, it makes you do the same thing over and over again because thats the best thing to do.

Wish fulfillment? What? Are you on drugs? What the fuck does that have to do with anything?

"imbecile and a peasant" - oh aren't we angry, little one. what makes you so angry about the game?

"Fallout, in 1997, understood that every weapon category needed to have different loadout options, so the combat had some variance."

Fallout and its sophisticated combat system. laughing out loud.

CS is certainly better in this department.

CS is not better than fallout when it comes to combat (Or anything else really), the combat isnt nearly as satisfying because there are no good death animations.
And I know fallout isnt a high bar, but thats my point, I didnt bring up jagged alliance or troubleshooter or any other competently made combat system, I brought up fallout for a reason.

Jrpgfan Lhynn oh come on, fallout’s combat is tb-arcade. CS’s is more cerebral - although I agree that the lack of gruesome death animations ala Fallout is a shame

edit: and I love fallout, including its combat

At least Fallout 1/2 let you start fights or stealth whenever you want, instead of only when the developers script it.

You have to walk into a room with your whole team and say "I am going to fight you now" and can't even keep some guys outside or try to flank anything. Then you win by throwing grenades at your feet.

I didnt bring it up because neither this nor AoD are this sort of game, VD is too neurotic to give the player any form of freedom. But yes.

The whole world is so fucking frustrating. Makes me remember about the doctor quest, when she sends you to get an implant. If you go for the squad implant the text says some fucking guy shoots the other two implants out of spite as he dies , not to let you have them. Its so mean spirited and nonsensical its ridiculous, and this attitude towards the player permeates the entire game.

I'm baffled why there is a "Master Blaster" feat for energy weapons when even if you scavenge everything in sight you will never have enough ammo to make it useful. I'm more than 2/3rds of the way through the game and have enough energy ammo for maybe a battle or two. Useless Perk is Useless. In fact, why even have energy weapons at all if you cannot power them? They are not -that- much better than projectile weapons. They should be absolutely devastating if they are going to be these ammo stingy "use in case of emergency" devices, and they simply are not.

Also Stealth is cancer in this game. I just got to the little section with Shadow where he wants you to stealth in to steal something. It is fucking absurd how hard that is unless you are a pure stealth build (like Faythe), but by being that you would kinda suck at everything else. The juice isn't worth the squeeze whatsoever. Dumping all those points & perks in stealth for what amounts to a couple side missions but having no relevance would be absurd. A solo stealth build -maybe- but even then you will suck so bad at everything else not sure that is even feasible. Needs a major rework.

It will pretty much go along the line like this:

"You finally arrived at a secluded container in the outskirt of The Pit. Nadya's arm in your, locked in a tensely romantic embrace. Your hand in hers, she opened the door to her private container.

Inside, petals of colored plastic cut to to be like flowers littered the makeshift bedding made of clothes scavenged from different sources. Not the smooth velvet you were expecting, but it have to do in this forsaken palace. Nadya went first as you eagerly followed.

She lit a candle made of oily scum that was accumulated on The Pit's power generator. "Come here and sit" she said in a voice much softer and smoother than the rags you are standing on.

She undressed with the grace of feline and exposed herself fully to you, encouraging you to do the same. The candle light made shadows dance while you hurried yourself to expose your flesh.

You held hands which sooner became an embrace. The air surrounding you became hotter as your body's temperature rises to follow your desire. She held your mandhood softly in her delicate hands, as she lounge her wet lips toward yours, kissing passionately. She strokes yours expertly, naked bodies caress naked bodies and rags around you. Her lips locked tightly, tounge dancing inside. You close your eyes

Suddenly pain. It happened so fast you cannot process it until too late. Your mouth bleed, no, your tongue bleed. Your blood streams endlessly as you gargle to form words, which only resulted in more blood rushing out from the nub where your tonge was.

Another pain. Your crotch felt like it was hit directly with a hot, plasma pistol. Nadya stood up. Spitting a bright red, chunk of flesh that you deduct to be your tounge. On her hand another piece of flesh. That's when you realized what had transpired. You summon all your strength to stand only for nadya's barefeet meeting your nose at deadly velocity. Your head hit the hard container walls and you sure you heard a crack.

While in daze, nadya appeared in your peripheral vision, going over your belongings which you have taken off willingly. A stasis grenade, a set combat armor in mint condition, your trusty colt and the rare, fully upgraded distortion field emitter.

"Good man, you were the best catch i have gotten in a while" thoughts racing trough your head. You did so much. You beat odds. Impossible odds. You survived from the deepest part of mission control. You survived ambushes. You survived monsters created in the bowels of hell. This must not be the end you thought. Anger rises. Rage burn, erasing all your pain. A moment of clarity. You stood up ready to charge.

"Ssssh darling". Said Nadya. She deftly pressed the stasis grenade activation button and slam it below the floor you are standing. It activated in a flash of light. Your muscles stopped, but your thoughts continue. Your eyes receive light. the bleeding stopped but your brain is still processsing the pain. It persist in your state of stasis. Nadya gathered her clothes and her prized, exiting the container Humming a happy melody. The last thing you heard was the sound of a key clinging in the forest of container deep below. The key to your metal coffin. The stasis subsided. The pain is finally real again. You bled and bled, drowing in your own pool of blood. Time became a vertigo, but for what feels like hours, you feel hatred burning within your helpless body, fueled by endless torment. Finally your vision fades, red becomes white, white becomes black. You lie lifelessly in the metal coffin"

(Liberal interpretation of how stasis works, for dramatic purpose)

taking throat slitter and shanking everyone* in mercy's house was somewhat satisfying

you no mess with lo wang

*okay technically the last guy survived with 9 hp because i guess he was a little too upset to take down, but then it was just the matter of capping his ass
that feat is not required in there(provided your sneaking is good). In fact very few locations truly need it.

1 guy survived because your CS was too low versus his awareness.

What are you wasting your ammo on? You can scavenge hundreds of cells throughout the game. I myself always had 100+ cells just sitting around constantly.

In regard to going last, I had the same 'problem' initially until I started to mind the initiative with whatever I could. Motor implants for DEX, feat(s), minding not to get into too much Armor penalty (I never went beyond -2 in the char sheet).
Believe me, it matters because my Evans was a shotgun tank (HP, armor, etc.), and even like that, since mid-game, he always went first in all but a few fights.
