i do use the keys and the only reason i discovered the snap shots and whatever is because i accidentally tapped 1 twice
Roxor, I respect your opinion greatly, but it seems you've become incredibly impatient and un-explorative in your gaming habits through the years. Some of your frustrations are hard to understand at times, considering the ponderous nature of the genre we've all learned to love.

Then again, it does seem year by year, RPGs are becoming one of your least favorite genres. So maybe it does make sense.

Take a second to explore a fairly straightforward UI and your time won't be wasted. But honestly if you're going to sit down to play an RPG, then you know what you're getting into.

So what's required to
actually shut off the engines and land the ship immediately? When I go to Mother there's just a brief dialogue and then I'm railroaded into delivering the monks' terms to all the factions again.

According to the steam guide, as I can't find this on the wiki:

You need to depose the Mother first back when you were in the Heart for the fuel cell and the scheming First Daughter suggested you help her pull that coup, only then you get a chance to convince the new Mother with some high speech check. Old one won't budge. Funnily enough your Covenant rep affects the speech check's disposition here, good luck if you also murdered the fifth daughter during Jed's quest

I don't know. I just interacted with the console, clicked navigation, then clicked send the ship back to Earth. When I left the room the monk woman ambushed me and I told her, we're going home:

question about party members, there seem to be few of them, why? Are they ~reactive~ (bleh?) If so, why did they go from the goons of Dungeon Rats to poor man's Bioware? If not, y not moar??

Let's say I make a racing game where the player's car is super crappy, every race it breaks down worse, and you don't even get enough money from winning to repair it.

When players complain about the inevitable death spiral, I say no problem, you can just use skill checks to skip races.

?????????????????? 10/10 codex GOTY!
You sound like a fucking schizo randomly intruding upon a group, exclaiming how retarded you are, then doing a goofy dance before leaving.

Come on pink eye, where's the love? Didn't we have good times over in the Kangmaker thread?

Keep enjoying your skillcheck/reload simulator, bros.
The skill checks in this game are deterministic, not random. Either you have the required level or you don't. I fail to see how reloading helps here.

Fair point, though I've never fully understood the urge, other people buying the game or not shouldn't affect your enjoyment. But I get supporting a studio you like.

Games like this are frustrating to me because I really want to like them, they feel like they're made for me, but then someone put cilantro in there and it all tastes like soap. Hopefully It's just me.

The thing about skillchecks, I think, is that their fun factor really depends on the writing and design around the skillcheck.

A talkie playthrough is, often, at the end of the day just "see highest check I can pass, click, ???? => WIN!". It's like a platformer with no jumping. What makes it satisfying is that the dialogue and level design sets up some expectations, and then the skillcheck lets you break them in cool ways. You get a good buildup of an intimidating tough guy bruiser who screams he's too tough for you, and then you get the satisfaction of a clever set of verbal defenestration.

I think one of the things AOD did so well is that there were quite a few places where you felt, this is the kind of persuasion check I've never gotten to do elsewhere, this is the kind of screwy thing I rarely get to convince people to do. (Something similar happens with Alpha Protocol and its reactivity options.) And having really strongly flavoured characters, as well as the political intrigue turned up to 11, really maximised the satisfaction here. (I actually think a dedicated swindler setting/quest, where you have to lie to different NPCs to, say, get them to invest in a completely fake company/building project, could be interesting for VD writing & ITS design.)
