Close Combat: Last Stand Arnhem

Hello there!

So; I'm an avid Close Combat fan, and out of all the games in the franchise, Last Stand Arnhem is in my personal opinion one of the better iterations of it. That being said, I am currently doing a playthrough of it for youtube. Now, I've played these games since the 90s, and overall racked up more hours of game-time spread across the various iterations of it than any sane human should. I suppose a good side-effect of this is that I am quite experienced with the games at this point in time!

I'm playing on Elite difficulty, and given the chance, I always try to make things as hard and challenging for myself in each and every battle, barring stifling myself intentionally. Since you can edit your opponent's troop composition, I will always replace redundant units with useful ones, and if he for some reason isn't fielding as much armour as he could, I will make sure he does, so that my challenge increases, and his chances of winning increases with it. I know the AI isn't a he/she, but sometimes it feels better to humanize my computer adversary!

I will start off playing through the grand campaign with the Allies, and afterwards I'll go through it with the Germans. I'll update this post with a link for the German playthrough when it's out there!

At the time of writing this, there are 24 episodes currently out, but more will come rapidly, and by the time you read this, there is a good chance the playthrough is finished!

Links follow below:

Hope you'll enjoy! Don't be afraid of leaving a comment or subscribing - it truly makes my day when people do!

Have a good one!

Close combat is a fantastic series. It's just unfortunate it didn't change much in the last 20 years.

Spot on. In the more modern iterations of them, I think they have specifically gone down a horrible path in regards to unit selection for battles. I have zero sense of giving a damn about a single damn soldier ever in the newer ones. It just gets worse with every iteration. Personally, I'd say they did it best in CC3. In that game I really care for every single soldier. Fast forward 20 years, and I only see them as pawns to throw away to achieve my goal, unfortunately.

LSA contributes some very nice unique mechanics, I especially like how the bridge features were implemented and the possibilities they open up for modding. It does have the same problems as most of the latest CC games in that soldiers are more hesitant than in the original iterations, and added to that the lethality of mortars is off and cover values are too low. As it stands mortars complete dominate the game and will shred even infantry lying prone and on ambush.

I hadn't really though about the points that you make here, but now that you say it, and I think about it, I must say that it is indeed very true. A bee flies by your charging elite units? better lie down immediately! don't wanna get stung now, do we...

And I have noticed units taking cover within buildings also seemingly getting eradicated rather quickly at times.

But the biggest thing for me that you mention here has to be the lethality of mortars. In one of the episodes - a 8cm mortar shell landed 20+ meters away from the nearest soldier of mine. It killed him, and another six guys upto damn near 40 meters away. That had me damn near flip my table.

Great videos!

One thing, Fjord Fox...

I haven't played this iteration of CC in years, and it may not work as well in game as in reality, but mortars dropping walls of smoke *SHOULD* make rapid "suicidal" assaults on things like bridges possible and far less costly. When the AI doesn't deploy immediately in front of you, anyway.

Haven't played anything in the series after CC4. Any compelling reason to pick up this one?

Delivering smoke should theoretically be the main role of the 2" mortar. I say theoretically, because even the 2" mortar's HE round, which was by all accounts not very effective, is devastating in LSA!

Well this one is a remake of CC2.
It's not really a remake of CC2, though. They cover the same operation but they're entirely different games. This one is more similar to the original CC4/5 in its campaign mechanics.
My mistake, there were several remakes that kept the original campaign mechanics.

I really enjoyed your German campaign in CC3CoI (My favourite remake among CC games and second favourite CC game overall), but I'll have to think about watching this series. CC2 is by far my favourite Close Combat game and the remake felt so inferior to me that only watching another veteran play it well could get me interested. That said, if you ever feel like playing the original CC2's Allied grand campaign you will definitely have my full attention.

You will also get my full interest if you ever decide to play a proper campaign of Panthers in the Fog as the Germans. That game doesn't have much exposure and I'd say it's pretty fine for a modern CC game. Much better than the borefest that was Gateway to Caen and general shitshow that was The Bloody First.

not an artichoke - Thanks! :) And yeah, hehe, you're absolutely right there, so thanks for the tip. - I've been using this strategy more in the playthrough as the game progresses, but I simply didn't come to think of it early on, as I personally have not been using a lot of mortars when playing this game, as I'm not a huge fan of the lottery aspect of them. :P (I know, I butchered that sentence) (also, I am finding out that mortars in LSA can be ridiculously viable. They're a bit OP even at times, if you ask me. Like... ridiculously effective. Some serious shrapnel on these badboys)

Jugashvili - Indeed! As I play along, I start realizing how ridiculous the mortars are in this game. In one episode I had a mortar shell impact 20 meters away from my closest soldier. It killed him. And also another 6 guys upto 40 meters away. I damn near flipped my table.

Luka-boy - I have to agree with GtC being a snoozefest. I played it once, and couldn't even bother bringing myself to play very far into it. And yeah. The Bloody First... Yikes. What were they thinking??? I really wanted it to work, but in no way shape or form does it. At least not for me.
Oh, and I definitely will be playing through both CC2 and PitF - I'm on a mission to play through all the base games, and possibly some mods after I'm done with that :) In fact, I intended to do CC2 instead of LSA atm, but when trying to run it through GoG it kept randomly crashing on me very frequently, so I opted to do a stable LSA playthrough instead for now, and sort that problem out later.

Thanks for showing interest guys, I'm glad there's a good amount of people out there that share my love for these games!

They're great games, still play them to this day. CC2 is generally considered the best of the series, for good reasons IMO.

I found LSA's grand campaign completely unbalanced when I played it back in the day. More generally, and like in TLD, the gameplay was completely wrecked by uber-powerful mortars. LSA also introduced your soldiers being shredded while inside buildings by enemy MGs in a matter of seconds, which was not fun, especially when playing as the Allies. LSA was a disappointment because of this - a shame because the maps were great and the two-BG-on-one-map thing was also a neat improvement from previous entries.

Yeah, the mortar and MG tuning of LSA is a bit annoying at times. Particularly when I try to give the enemy the best setup for the situation at hand. Currently, I have fought the germans on a map twice, and the third time... well, I've annihilated all their grenadiers and such, so now, I'm setting myself up to fight against 10+ defending heavy MG teams. Which will be episode 55, and I am dreading even taking it on. Myself, I'm fielding like 9 regular infantry teams, and I need to attack, so yeah... wish me luck.. I guess?

Played the eastern front one as a kid, remember mortars being op, amazing series. Having your team full of veterans from the entire campaign defending Berlin in a last stand against soviet hordes was fucking amazing.

It was indeed! CC3 is my favourite CC game of all time, and I have several playthroughs of it out on my youtube channel, should that be of interest

Completely soulless, games with console origins are made with those limitations in mind, you should always try to get the experience intended. Might as well play only AAA garbage kid.

I'm not sure if you posted this in the right place, or...? Seems like a stark change in tone, considering your previously voiced sentiments towards the game. Am I missing something here...?

I can't edit the initial post, but; I've now completed both the Allied and German playthroughs! A grand total of 194 episodes. Took a damn while! :p

73 for the Allied playthrough, and 121 for the German one.

Either way, here is the first episode of the German playthrough;
