It's late, and I am bored. Time to attempt to LP one of my favourite games ever, in the worst english I can manage. I can't promise more updates than this one, this is merely the result of having two hours to burn and nothing better to do. That said, let's begin.

WdBpUwu.png

Welcome to Missionforce:Cyberstorm! There was another attempt at a LP here aeons ago, but now it's lost so who cares. What's Cyberstorm? It's a Turn Based mech combat game. It has exagons, a fairly complex simulation system and a fairly fun combat system, all bolted on a somewhat mediocre randomly generated campaign. Yep, randomly generated. There are only three "story missions" and they are kinda samey.

Don't worry though, the plot kinda justifies this and we get both a fairly good amount of planets and some nice preset missions. It's the Battle Brothers of its age, just better.

IQADjwv.png

So, PLOT. Oh God, this one gonna be long. Long story short, we are recruits for Unitech, one of the human corporations expanding in this goddamn galaxy. Human expansion is in full swing those days, because the corps are getting away from the Empire an.... ya know, who the fuck cares. Cyberstorm was a piece of the shared Earthsiege\Starsiege universe, an attempt done by Dynamix to create a somewhat shared universe after they lost the Battletech license. It's a mess, as it goes from platforming games to mecha games to Tribes. Yes, the MP-focused jetpack shooter is in the same goddamn universe as this TB game. Who cares.

In short, we're greenshirts hired by a soulless corporation to fight Cybrids, intelligent machines created centures ago. They tried to genocide us, we proved better and kicked their asses three times before they gave up and escaped the solar system. Now the Corporations are both expanding humanity's domain in the stars and hunting the fleeing Cybrids. We kill bots and we're goddamn good at it.

ybHDFqc.png

Oh, wait, you expected HUMAN PILOTS? Too bad. Humanity has since found that it's kinda hard to fight Cybrids, so we employ disposable clones created with the genetic material of the heroes of past wars. Or monkeys and cats. I wish I was joking, shit gets weird.

Bioderms will be a problem some centuries later (as everyone that played Tribes 2 knows) but for now they are our little disposable slave warriors. We can clone them, dispose of them, and they all have expiration dates. The longest-living bioderm live for like, 10 years or so- the lesser ones for 2-3 years. Considering that a single mission can take from one to three months of game time, you can guess we're gonna need replacements. Hey, they aren't real humans. Don't feel bad.

The image complains how we get three shitty generic models of Bioderm for the starting missions, 'cause we need to prove our worth or something. Model 001, Model 101 and Model 110, generic Bioderms with the shittiest stats. The true Bioderm genetic repository is a tad more varied, but we need to earn it on the battlefield.

With what, you ask?

zqhfj5W.png

Ffs, with giant mechas of course. HERCs (short for HERCULANS, Humaniform-Emulation Roboticized Combat Unit with Leg-Articulated Navigation) are mechas. We will see several models, but for now we are stuck with two shitty light class Hercs. Hercs in Cyberstorm can be customized, and the Hangar options are kinda varied. Weapon options, of course, are many, from energy weapons to projectile weapons to missiles to plasma weapons to electromagnetic pulses to sharp sticks.

HERCs differ from Battlemechs mostly thanks to individual energy shielding. Shielding is kinda big, 'cause it regenerates and it can be focused. You may be surprised to find out that shield management is kinda important in Cyberstorm, because even the best armour will crumble if we got too many shots in. And of course, physical damage will bypass armour sooner or later causing internal damage. it's perfectly prossible to get a lucky enemy shot that vaporizes the pilot sphere leaving a pristine Herc dead on its legs, like a modern piece of art.

In short, keep your goddamn shields up.

Energy management is also essential, 'cause Hercs have engines (that give us power) and batteries (that store power). Power is essential to move and to fire weapons (you can guess that energy weapons require a ton of it). Batteries can store excess power for later use, but if you run out it's .... well, shitty. No mobility, no shield recharge, no weapons. Don't run out of power.

The mechanics between shield, ammo&power management, summed up with the pilot mechanics, make Cyberstorm the fun experience it is.

Let's see what mech...HERCS they dumped on us.

SHADOW: The Shadow is awesome. Not now, of course. Also, it's a crap combat unit. With awesome I mean it can mount a scout sensor array, giving us a better view of the battlefield. I didn't tell you about sensor ranges? Well it sucks. Also, it's fast, cheap. If I ever manage to put up other updates you'll see that some scout Shadows are standard in deployments. I like to use them without weapons, even, as they can mount only shitty ones anyway.

For now? They are crap. They mount two small energy weapons and two small missile system, plus a full array of four special slots. All the weapons we have now are bad, and in the special slots we have nothing bar Mining systems. Wait, I didn't tell you we are also required to MINE crap, because we are wageslaves and the corporation wants money. So our giant killbots have mining systems.

Awesome.

REMORA: It's a light scout\combat unit. It has two light energy weapons slots, two light missile slots, two light cannon slots. And a single special slot for extra equipment. It's terrible and we aren't going to buy another one EVER because it's terrible. We are given one in the beginner package and you'll see how much it sucks.

Its problem are not the weapon selection (that's light but acceptable) it's the fact that it's unflexible, paper-thin armour and crappy shields. Like the Shadow, but the Shadow has a scout sensor array. The Remora is trash mob for Cybrids.

Oh gosh. I am already tired. Let's continue.

f8Yyw14.png

Welcome to our happy little Herc base. From here we buy Hercs, we clone Bioderms, and we plan months-long missions against the dreaded Cybrid foe. You can click on this here. It's all animated and cute and charming and mid-90ies.

i6LBf6V.png

The Herc bay. No prize to get what we do in here. We buy, upgrade, rename and scrap Hercs here. I'll need to do a big dump of all the info about the Herc Bay, but I need to hunt down some old FAQs first and it's a ton of stuff to write and you are already bored. You want to blow up things, right?

xkB7hcg.png

Too bad, still two buildings to check. Here we have the Bioderm Facility: in the Biovat we can create new cute soldier-slaves, or give them VR Training to sharpen their skills. Or heal them in the Medvat, or use the Medvat to recycle them for money after they are useful. It's like my text-based Russian porn games, just more ethical because they aren't human.

2V5KJ86.png

A face only a mother could love. They don't have mothers, though. Lucky, aren't we? Again, I'll give more details on Bioderms if I ever do another update. For now, we'll get three of them. Grimwulf I , Kalin I and shywn I. Don't worry, even if you survive I'm gonna recycle you as soon as I can. Your genetic material is simply horrible.

iwe2dyn.png

Last building, the Command Center. From here we choose missions, we check the non-functional links to the manual (the format of the manual is unreadable for post Win95 machines, but I'll try to extract some of the text, the fucking thing had the Bioderm bios and nice data on the setting) or watch some training videos. We don't care for now.

We need to choose a mission and kill. I'll prepare the three Hercs off-screen, the first missions are kinda separated from the rest of the game because you have so little to play with and the game truly opens when you get your first promotions. So we get three Hercs, we link (place the Bioderms in) the Hercs, and away we go.

wkeqMFt.png

Mission select screen. We could play the safe tutorial mission, with a single lonely Cybrid turret and some easy minerals to mine, but it's 4k credits. It's nothing, guys. We can dream higher. Who cares if it's Hard difficulty, we can do it.

kjuEqtr.png

We'll pick this one instead. Standard mining mission, 20k. Some Cybrid resistance expected. Two months to complete.

qHbbfYp.png

The planet is Parsus. In Cyberstorm, planets have different enviromental effects. Here, we have higher gravity, so Hercs move slower (in lower gravity, Hercs are faster). Plus the atmosphere is poisonous, so if we get hit in the enviromental support system we are as dead as a helicopter pilot in Chernobyl 1986. Don't worry, EVERYTHING WILL BE GREAT.

Away we go.

mYqOFTj.png

SFuI5c7.png

Enjoy the spiffy animation of our dropship flying towards new worlds, where we will spread the Glory of Mankind for eternity. Or mine stuff for a shitty corporation for a substandard wage. One of the two.

JizlVm7.png

h7tfAoP.jpg

Oh God, this place is a dump. See, those are our three Hercs and the big ship is the dropship. It can be targeted by enemies, but it can't be destroyed and it will fly away if attacked. The two smaller Hercs are Shadows, piloted by Shwyn-clone and Kalin-clone, while the boxy white thing is our dear Grimwulf-clone.

We have been dropped in the middle of the map, so I guess the best option is to form a scouting party, check for Cybrids, clean up the map and then mine everything we can. For money! And profit!

CYUoxsp.jpg

Holy fuck, Shwyn, yer a lucky man. During the initial sweep south we already get two small scout Cybrids, those spider-looking things. Ok, ok, we got this. We will get in formation and unleash our DEVASTATING WEAPONRY

The combat model of Cyberstorm, particularly the overwatch mechanics, deserve some analysis. Can't be bothered to do that now. Enjoy the results.

RHcrv64.jpg

Ok. We're good. No reaction fire from the robots. We'll drop their shields with our energy weapons and then destroy them with missiles and cannons. One at a time. We'll redirect our shielding towards them to avoid retaliation.

Let's ignore for a moment that our weapons are terrible and our Bioderms the "special needs" bioderms. Everything will be great.

B7682pt.jpg

Awesome. An entire round of firing and we manage to slightly damage the Spectre (cannons and missiles can damage shielded targets, but only in minimal amounts) and we utterly failed to collapse their shields. Time to bucke up and hope for the best.

Let's crouch. Hercs can crouch to improve defenses.

NkpE0j4.jpg

We are lucky. The AI goes full derp and one Spectre charges, while the other retreats with some utterly useless covering fire.

1sfnj8l.png

Kalin-clone still gets shot, one lucky 20mm cannon hit hits the scout sensor array. Remember when I told you about internals? Kalin's shields did not collapse, but some of the damage managed to pass through and we are lucky it got something useless.

Imagine if it damaged a leg, life support or God forbid the engine.

Well, now that one of the Spectres closed in it should be easy prey. Firing to closer targets is easier, after all, and we should fear no reaction fire.

qWACD8t.jpg

Yeaaah. Another turn of fire and the Spectre goes doooown in flaaames!

It was merely a lucky missile hit by Shwyn because we missed 60% of our shots. Crappy derms, crappy weapons.
HQ tells us the "immediate" Cybrid threat is over. We could pull out , leave the other Cybrid alive and let the smaller prospector teams automine the ore, but that won't do. We want money and we need money, and I'm not gonna leave Cybrids alive or pay for subcontractors.

We hunt.

71hj37m.jpg

Useless. THE FUCKING THING ESCAPED.

They can do that, if outmatched. Ok, no biggie. This is a ore field, we'll fill up our Mining Extractor systems and then leave.

Sx3FAgJ.png

Excellent. 30k payment, 20k mission objectives, 12k for mining. And we got the promotion to Unit Leader, that will open the Bioderm Genetic repository and quite a bit of options.

X2QkWix.png

Will we discover dark conspirancies (that will ever be explored just in text form because we can't get nice missions?) Is the Cybrid central control mind, Prometheus, again active after centuries? Why are Cybrids interested in Bioderms?

ugyBxR9.png

Will we get to sample the variety of cloned pilots at our disposal?

2HuFuDg.png

Will we get to play with better toys and Hercs?

Maybe. If I can be bothered to type another update. That said, try Cyberstorm for yourself if you enjoy old TB games. Some kind people added Win10 compatibility (search in google) and the game itself is easy to find in malware-infested abandoware sites.

And if I ever do another update, feel free to sign up. I'll maybe do a write up on Bioderms, there are like 30 of the fucking things and I'll cheat and add even the supposedly unique ones (furries, monkeys, brains-in-a-jar....).

That said, whatever. Good night, and to the next time.

Finally, something on the internet which I can't masturbate too!

Yes, and honestly it's bad as I expected at least a minimum of enthusiasm. Sure, I am a rambling and autistic old man, but ffs it's a very good TB game ;_;

I should have played some Japanese porn game. Fat brofists guaranteed. Everyone loves cute girls, no one loves horrible protoplasmic clones melting in space.

I'll dump another post and hope for a bit more of audience partecipation. So, we're going to talk about Bioderms.

Bioderms are your pilots, your beauties, your pride and joy. Well, not exactly. Plot wise, we need them because in the age of lighting fast mecha combat normal human pilots won't cut it against our dear robotic Cybrid enemies.

Well, before we get to the meat of this update (the Genetic Repository) I'll explain a tad better what the Bioderm Facility.

I13nL9S.png

First, the Biovat. It creates Bioderms, and the price gets higher as we get higher quality derms. Their skills are rather self-explanatory, bar Command that gives a bonus to Stability for nearby allied Bioderms. What's Stability? Ahh, yes. Bar skills, Bioderms have three attributes: Health, Stability and Toxicity. Health is how , well, healthy they are. Getting hit or poisoned hurts. Stability is the stability of their genetical matrix, it gets also hurt by damage and by drug use. Drug use? Yes, and it's linked to Toxicity: in battle we can drug our Bioderms to enhance their fighting skills, but we'll take a hit to toxicity. Drug abuse can have dire consequences, but if the other option is melting in a forgotten moon....

The derm you see here is the top of the line, Tola, and as you can see he's good at everything and long-lived. Usually you get three "tiers" of Bioderms: the three crappy introductory models, the standard genetic repository, and the "special" bioderms that you get for promotions. Special bioderms are supposedly unique, but I've cheated and we can recruit them freely. Why? First, because I want to give you, dear people, full choice of getting your own slave clone, plus the coolest bioderms are specials.

I say "coolest", not more efficient. Like many things in Cyberstorm, optimization forces you to dump 95% of Bioderms for the best ones as soon as you can. But I've played this to death and you deserve better than boring optimal play.

7ONnOg5.png

The Virtual Training Room (or VREC) is where we "improve" our derms with virtual lessons. They aren't that pricy and you can get a boost out of it until you hit the training cap. Did I tell you that all the menus are charmingly animated and they move, blob, and you can click on things? I love it.

9Kbd3MP.png

The MedVat is where we heal, stabilize or detox out Bioderms. Or melt them for money, if we want. If you do so you even get a very fitting scream of pain as your loyal servant dies painfully for your gain. As you notice, every Bioderm has a rank (A1 in this case) and they can rise in rank, improving. You can see its age, also, and in this case it's a painful 1, that roughly means ONE YEAR.

Well, that said, I'll now dump ALL THE BIODERM matrixes here for you to choose. Sadly I can't open the online manual with their bios, so I'll merely put up their face and say what I remember, plus an evaluation of their abilities. Again, choose freely: money is no matter, and I'm here to have fun. The only other thing that I ask from you is a Suicidal Rating: how dangerous you want your assignment to be? Normal, Dangerous, Insane? When I mean dangerous, I mean truly. It will help me to choose where to put you in the battlefield, and to RP your derm.

There are up to 30 derms, so this gonna be a tad long. Don't worry about money or optimization for your choice, pick what you like. There are just two derms that I would dislike to pick, because they are clearly unbalanced, but you'll recognize them immediately. But whatever if you want them you get them.

Holy shit Imgur is going in alphabetical order.

Mlv6Khe.jpg

Andra is a standard derm. His genetic matrix was american or somethin' I don't remember. Skillset-wise, he has command skill and good weapon skills, paying with a shitty missile skills. Missile skills are very important as they are the optimal non-energy damage dealers. Who cares, he has other weapons he can use.

jrOPvX1.jpg

Stealing from a forgotten FAQ, Borok looks like every trucker I've ever seen. And I come from a family of truckers. He would be good if not for the atrocious energy skill. Energy skill is THE weapon skill. Awww. Sad.

UxPCkaj.jpg

See, Boto? take banana, Boto. kill Cybrid, Boto. It's a special Bioderm and it's a fucking monkey. The devs liked a lot the idea of giving him a suicide module and sending him to blow up. If someone takes him, you are guaranteed to have a suicide node strapped to you as soon as I get it.

nZtoM1B.jpg

Crow may look like a druggie, but he's a solid derm. He merely looks like he smokes pot.

CTPE4QA.jpg

The designer of Elana had a thing for fantasy novel and fake elven names, I presume. This means she lives long, has crappy skills, and she's ugly as hell. At least with a 10 years lifespan she has time to improve. Well, if she does not blow up first.

Pgkl2bE.jpg

It's your friendly African-American cop, just in Bioderm form. I like Garan, he's fat but efficient. Good skillset and good lifespan.

UAdA1ma.jpg

Imra must be Asian or something, but sadly she's not the big-titted Asian type comrade Kalin likes. Bar the shitty energy skill she's very competent.

xpsFPHc.jpg

Jai is old, Jai is tired, Jai had enough of this shit. Despite looking 70 he works like all other Bioderms. Give him a beard and he's Jeff Vogel, just if Jeff Vogel was a pilot of killbots instead of a tired indie developer.

d36wnop.jpg

We wux kangz? Jamal , wait, Jamax isn't bad. He's worse. 25 MISSILE SKILL? HOW I AM SUPPOSED TO WORK WITH THAT?

xumjXZo.jpg

Jarvis is another one of my favourites. He's good all around, plus he looks southern euro. Or Indian.

Zxbdz4k.jpg

Jath has command skills. He'll need them, because he sucks at everything else. Must've been a manager with a clonation fetish forcing his genetical matrix on the system, I presume.

VXTjt2J.jpg

DENEGERATES LIKE YOU BELONG TO A CROSS

Kaesar is a special derm, and I would be wary in picking him. He's too good. If you pick him you'll get the top-tier level suicide missions all the time.

ARnYB6w.jpg

Khadisha may be fugly, but for her price she's very good. Some lessons in VR and she's good to kick Cybrid... ass?

zP1BXas.jpg

Kouras has 35 Missile skill, and he probably cries all the time with Jamal why he even exists. The reply is obvious, pricetag.

l3PlAd5.jpg

Kyoko is crazy cheap, and she can manage. Just like your garden variety Chinese whore, 30 bucks for a bang.

jCv1v5t.jpg

Maia is another top-tier special Bioderm, and pays crazy skills with shitty physical stats. 10 Stability means a lucky shot can kill her, and she's crazy expensive. Want to RP a muderbaby? Here you go. Like Kaesar, she's an option I would somewhat dislike, but I'll accept her nonetheless.

zAljEqg.jpg

Ma-Yuan doesn't look like much, but his stats are good where it counts and he's physically strong. A good pick.

m4gYXl5.jpg

BRAIN IN A JAR. Boop-beep-boop. Mentor is good and he's a brain in a jar.

He has also the best death animation.

y3xAofw.jpg

WHY THE FUCK YOU ARE STILL HERE

u8GUUfE.jpg

I TOLD YOU TO GO AWAY

8fMcmVu.jpg

AWAY

(the three Models are the Ensign level Bioderms. Pick them if you want, you'll make me suffer)

3Qlx8vG.jpg

Nura is as hot as a Bioderm can be, and she's even competent. Can you fuck Bioderms? I swear there must be some supplementary material explaining that. Gotta check the Tribes 2 novellas again.

BcWqYks.jpg

35 Missile skill and a face that makes me thing he's the beginning of that crazy furry Bioderm attempt. I like the name though, Persis.

rrQ6EgG.jpg

Qabal looks constipated and he, despite being a special Bioderm, has mediocre skills everywhere. He supposedly learns fast, though.

Supposedly.

Gohty75.jpg

Tarn is good and he looks like a mid-90ies fighting game character. I liked Mortal Kombat. Was shit at it.

rCwExy3.jpg

It's wonderful to see that Ron Perlman is still getting work in the future. 99 cannon skill, yo. Cannons are so bad he's not even unbalanced.

SY2YyhL.jpg

Tola, despite being black, is the best. Good skills, good stats, Command skill. He's the top tier standard derm and in a standard campaign he WILL be your most cloned derm. He is even from the genetics of a Great Hero of the past Cybrid wars, and a battle buddy of Kaesar.

I like Tola.

4LSPcNN.jpg

From the depths of subsaharan Africa, Uru comes. A solid pick.

0NZh7aL.jpg

You can't see it here, but he's a freakin' catman. Want to be a furry? HERE.

95 piloting skills without the drawbacks of the monkey, though.

bh4sZP4.jpg

Xian is bad and he has 35 missile skills. He looks fat even!

So, here you go. Pick one, a name, and a Suicidal Rating. Go wild. I need at least 3-4 to play some missions, sign up please. Don't leave me alone in the darkness.

You misspelt my handle into a US bicycle brand =/

(Sorry, can't read this LP. The screenshots are 1920x while my screen is only 1280x so I can't really make out any fine details in the shots, including text.)

Oh god, I'm sorry on both regards. I'll try to cut them to a more readable size, and I'm sorry for the mispelling.

Wanna submit a recruit in the meantime?

You too, Kalin , Nazi fuck.

This looks interesting. Reporting for duty as Boto the kill-monkey!
Name? BB.
SR? Max (not that it won't matter as I doubt you'll let him survive a single mission)

That should allow me to both participate and quickly switch to something better once the character dies. Also, please include a gameplay video or something to see the death animations for the lulz.

Grimwulf, Kalin, I'm gonna pump you so full of drugs you are gonna be the bestest Bioderms ever.

I could even try. Suggestions for free video editing software? There is a full deaths video on youtube, but it has all of 'em.

The plan was to keep cloniing you on the same chassis until Kalin 46, but if you want to switch, good for me.

I HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE FOR THE FIRST SERIOUS MISSIONS. We're going in, comrades.

Also, basic mech evaluation in the next updatan.

So, does the age thing actually matter?

Since the all-time favorite model seems to have a lifespan of 1 year.

So, does the age thing actually matter?

Since the all-time favorite model seems to have a lifespan of 1 year.

A mission can require 1 to 3 months between travel time and combat. A lifespan of 1 means a Bioderm lives roughly 1 year. When not in deployment, Bioderms get frozen back at the Herc Base.

So the first generation of Grimwulf and Kalin have a lifespan of roughly 6-8 missions, depending on what we get. A Tola can live an entire campaign, lifespan of 60-70 missions.

I don't remember if getting old also gives you penalties. Cyberstorm is a very simple yet well-made game: the mechanics blend well.

In universe, this also means Bioderms always live in combat or inside BioVats: it's not a good life, methinks. Even if you supposedly lack superior thinking capabilities.

Ahh, when it's late and it's raining and the world seems to stop, quietly waiting for the new day.

And I am here writing updates in the middle of ButtFuck, Nowhere. Good.

We Have New Recruits! I can have just 4 Bioderms and 4 Hercs now, so we're gonna need some time before I get everyone on board.

sfq8III.jpg

Eriador I, Tola-based. SUPERIOR

3FXRS7H.jpg

Azira, his genetic code recovered from some dusty tomb somewhere.

ZEW4k2C.jpg

BB, ready to roll.

buoylWF.jpg

And Kalin, ready to derp.

First of all, I'm gonna give a serious series of VR lessons to Kalin and BB. Needs at least basic proficiency in weapon handling. Not that it's gonna help much.

Let's spoiler this shit for easier reading.

So, last time we got promoted.

rTbDN8j.jpg

SJKYrRt.jpg

Bar the usual passive-aggressive spiel from our superiors and comrades, we get to know that the Cybrids are not interested in Bioderm Genetic Matrixes, and are recovering some where our less fortunate comrades failed. At the same time, we have some news about "Prometheus".

For those of you who played Earthsiege and Starsiege (no one), Prometheus (Giver-of-Will in Cybrid lingo) is\was the first Cybrid, created centuries ago by a guy named Solomon Petresun. Shit went south, Prometheus gave humanity a more Skynet-like kind of fire (like, nuclear fire) not before helping Petresun becoming a transhuman immortal. Long story, and muddled one. Prometheus is our Skynet. Mankind kicked his ass three times (on Earth, on the Moon and on Pluto) and in theory we killed him two times already. The second time for good, always theoretically. The Cybrids, their leader dead, escaped the Solar System through faster-than-light travel, and we followed, bent on revenge.

The thing is, Cyberstorm is fairly peculiar in theme, despite being stock sci-fi. See, the Cybrids aren't that powerful here: they are escaping from mankind and have been on the run for centuries. They escape, we follow, we kill them, and we colonize. Rinse and repeat. They are on their way to become irrelevant, a remnant. In Cyberstorm 2 they will be a remant, and the warfare will be between Corporations: when Tribes rolls round, centuries after Cyberstorm, Cybrids will be an half-remembered myth, and will survive as infiltrators in human society, taking human form to escape annihilation.

See, plot. Back in the 90ies they cared.

HB9WfbU.jpg

But we get also NEW TOYS! Let's see what we got.

OGRE: The Ogre is a good one. It will be the backbone of our early teams, and it's a well designed Herc, with four energy slots and two cannon slots. When opposition becomes heavier it will be used as a heavy skirmisher at best, but for now it's our best pick.

SENSEI: The Sensei is a heavy scout. It's kinda useless, as scouts work better as unarmed fast Hercs. A armed scout will merely result in it getting overwhelmed easily. It has its uses, though, it's an excellent suicide unit, as the Suicide Node gets better the bigger the Herc reactor is: the Sensei hits the sweet spot between a reactor big enough to cause damage and enough speed to reach the target and blow up before retaliation.

GIANT: The Giant mounts ballistic weapons. Ballistic weapons are bad, and the Giant is a subpar platform. The idea was indeed to use the Ogre as a shield-killer and the Giant as a finisher, but for the same price you get two Ogres that work fairly better.

We buy an Ogre. We'll upgrade our fleet honestly, with the money earned from missions. I'm gonna cheat money just for Bioderms.

From the component side of things, we get a ton of new weapons (mostly improvements) and a variety of new mining systems. I'll explain the Herc Bay in depth in a future update, merely know that I keep things up-to-date and as good as we can get with money.

About assignments, Eriador and Azira get comfy combat Hercs while BB and Kalin get both a Shadow. LIVING DANGEROUSLY

After a quick scan of the mission we can do, I pick the highest-paying Mining mission. 20k for a run, not bad.

ROJhXfA.jpg

So, Tirith in the Paracelsus system. Two months, gravity half of the normal, istant death without Life Support, and the electromagnetic field could age to death our Bioderms. Awesome, and it's merely a first chapter planet. Cybrid presence is reported as light.

AWAAAAY

IOsYa28.jpg

So, we deploy. Nothing here bar our dropship. Usual fare, Shadow Hercs start scouting and the heavier units prepare to engage. Mining missions are all like this, so this will be again short. If we met light resistance, of course.

2y6aPYC.jpg

We're lucky. The Cybrids welcome us by shooting some useless laser fire against our dropship. Let's get 'em, boys. It's just a Spectre, a light recon Cybrid Herc.

The idiot charges us blindly. We kill it and then we mine everything. Is this seriously on Hard Mode?

y843hHR.jpg

Well, that was disappointing. On the positive Kalin has now just 4 months left to live. What a pity :lol::lol:

Let's sell our Remora, get another Ogre and upgrade our weaponry a bit. Let's keep mining until Unitech Command trusts us with something more.... dangerous.

Another round on Parsus.

c94GIMW.jpg

This time, we get TWO Spectres. Poor Cybrids. Azira and Eriador unleash bright, concentrated light on them, burning them to cinders.

YSJZeEs.jpg

BB and Kalin mine everything. 60k, cheap and easy.

qphHwrX.jpg

Kalin has two months left to live. Kalin, you were supposed to save the white race, not to die with it!

Well, Kalin deserves something better to die than a shitty mining mission. We'll take a recon mission, and assault the base. Kalin will go out in a blaze of glory, at least!

ughPeGA.jpg

Recon missions are easy. Go in, get a good look at the base, get out. You'll destroy it in the future. You can attack it, but it's not necessary.

r1e4KRa.jpg

We drop, form up, and go north. The Cybrid base is surely there, waiting for us.
Awesome, three Spectre units charge us cannons blazing. They manage to damage both BB and Azira, but the shields are up, absorbing the worst of the damage. Poor line of action. Soon two Spectres are smoldering wrecks. Kalin got one, Azira the other. One left. The Cybrids start panicking and we intercept a request for additional defense units (Yes, the game has small messages like that, it's flavourful).

(If you ask why I have a single screenshot here, ShareX ate the beginning of the mission. Dammit.)

4WRBChE.jpg

We push north, and find a Lv1 Command Center. Small base, this one, probably just an outpost. One thing that I love is that most buildings have at least 3-4 different sprites to signal different damage levels. Like most things in this game, it's a little touch that I love.

iDdJYJE.jpg

We move into position, and unleash our weaponry. No mercy. Glory to Mankind, as they say. The Command Dome is soon in flames. Kalin, the honour his, gives the last shot.

PROMOTIONS.

FEMALE AI VOICE: YOUR NEW RANK GIVES YOU MORE HERCS AND BIODERMS

And Kalin reaches the end of his life cycle, and gets euthanized. The perils of choosing a Model 001, my man! Next time, more data, more info, and more Bioderms. Stay tuned, or whatever.

The game sure does love (ab)using grey for the mechs.

Unitech mechas are grey, Cybrids are black. Bad choices, but eh, that's how it is comrade. The Dynamix guys didn't get good mecha designs until Starsiege (so until 1998). I'll do a little image dump.

The Earthsiege designs were Battletech-inspired, with an eye to technical limitations of the era.

They weren't exceptional, though, and again I truly get the feeling most where draw just to keep a good shape for modeling.

With Starsiege the Dynamix guys gave their best shot, so we got Battletech-style art

And interesting designs for Cybrid mechas, going for a clear insectoid-mechanical feel.

The second image is from the doomed fan-made Starsiege 2845 project. Methinks I'm gonna dump some industry facts\lore facts between the updates, as the Dynamix guys were kinda peculiar on their shared-universe thing and fan interaction.

I'll image dump even the Hercs we have seen so far.

The Specter, gangly-looking thing.

Remora. You won't see another of these things ever again, bar of course if you require to pilot it specifically.

You'll see a ton of Shadows, instead. We'll lose a lot when the Cybrids will start packing serious firepower.

I for one am proud to be recycled after working my ass off at Initech so that Dayya's stock could go up a quarter of a point.

Yeaaah... So, Kalin, what's happening? We're putting new cover sheets on all Bioderm termination reports.

So if you could just go ahead and do that before dying, that would be great, mmkay? Thaaanks...

*Pics* Not so bad, they may be blocky, but they have their charm. These Starsiege models are definitively better though.

Still, too bad for the limited color palette.

Ahaha, Varna would probably go ballistic regarding Dynamix's simulations, as they are arcadey as they go. If Heavy Gear was the "simulationist" approach towards Mechs, Earthsiege is the American Action Movie approach: you go in and blast away happily at the Evil Machines.

Before I forgot, all the mecha titles have been released as freeware by Hirez.

Earthsiege 1\2 require Dosbox and some work with CPU cycles, and I have no idea about Starsiege on Win7\10. They are very fun if simple games, Starsiege in particular tries to be very, very "cinematic", like a Space Opera.

Sure, the HiRez list lacks the other "theoretically part of the series" games (Stellar-7, Nova 9, Hunter-Hunted, Metaltech: Battledrome and the two Cyberstorms) but it's still something.

Holy shit, I never knew Dynamix also made Outpost 2 and Betrayal at Krondor. Not bad for a bunch of guys from Oregon.

What does the Command skill do anyway? From one picture, it seems like it increases "stability"?
