2017 release? Not likely considering there's zero in the way of concrete information about this game.

Hype with Beyond Good & Evil? Maybe if they're targeting the 35+ year old gamer market.

That has me wondering: for all this sequel hype that emerges in every 2-3 years, I wonder how many folks have actually played Beyond Good & Evil. Initial sales were rather low, and I somehow doubt that numbers achieved through digital distribution on PC or trough sales of HD version on last gen consoles are anything to write home about. And then we get to the question of folks that even played, let alone beaten their copy, even among those that will readily claim to be excited on various forums.

Now, game obviously has its fanbase, and some folks withing gaming media are quite passionate about it, but this excitement still looks... I don't know: manufactured, fake, insincere?

I didn't play until I grabbed the PC version on Steam a couple of years ago. It's a charming game with the semi-open world stuff but nothing amazing. I don't see this having the same weight as a Dark Souls/Bloodborne/whatever console exclusive that will drive tens of thousands of sales.

And, yeah, as you point out, just because it might have had a decent amount of purchases on Steam isn't very telling. Tons of people buy shit that's at $2.50 without thinking twice and never end up actually playing it.

Quite possible but that would support my point that BGE2 isn't some kind of massive marketing tool to sell a new console. Especially a Nintendo one.

Neither was Bayonetta 2 or Devils Third. I guess they just want somewhat secure more titles for future systems.

Someone must think they do otherwise the console makers wouldn't pay publishers to have them.

Shadorwun: Hong Kong
This will probably be a NX (time) exclusive. Massive butthurt incoming!
Gotta sell units somehow. Going down in history as the only console to have beyond good & evil 2 for even a small amount of time would be hilarious.

But I doubt it. Nintendo hasn't done stuff right in a while.

UPDATE 29/9/16 9.15am: He's done it again - Michel Ancel has posted another piece of artwork, and this time we're even more certain its concept art for Beyond Good & Evil 2.

jpg

The image shows one of Beyond Good & Evil's anthropomorphic sharks, although in far higher detail. It appears to be an in-engine render.

You may remember BG&E's Francis and Rufus, the sharks who hung around Bar Akuda.

Ancel captioned the artwork with a reference to today's big Ubisoft shareholder meeting, where Vivendi is expected to push for a seat on Ubisoft's board. Vivendi has been buying up Ubisoft shares and attempting a takeover of the company for several months.

"Ready for the fight. Independence #ubisoft day".

I'm surprised that you guys are excited for this. Original game was almost a proto-AC (quasi-open world, pronounced collect-a-thon element, basic combat/basic stealth/basic automated platforming) and, considering how modern Ubisoft works, this sequel can only turn out to be another Ubisoftian open world AC reskin.

You forgot excellent sound design and music, pretty good art direction, fun characters, variety in exploration.

Have to agree. I enjoyed the first one... but that was a decade ago. The formula has been done to death by now and it's not as if the story was very compelling.

Problem with that is if you look at the new concept art they're going for super-realistic stuff. It's cute when you have the animated shark-men and pigs... notsomuch when they're 2016 photo-realistic man-beasts.

I guess they ditched the 2008 version long ago and making it from scratch.
Looking at that concept art, it looks like they will at the very least be sticking with the greyish "realistic" art direction of those 2008 leaks, instead of original's colorful french cartoon style.

I have very good memories of BG&E but i don't remeber that much really. Mostly the music, and art style i think. Its one of those games i remember very fondly, like Grim Fandango, except GF i played countless times.
