Is there any way to identify a magic item without paying an NPC 100 gold? Can't find the spell anywhere. Also can you get the benefits of an item without it being identified?

The spell you need is the tier five spell of the divination school, called "Divine Magic". I _think_ you get the benefits even without identifying an item, but I can not vouch for it.

100 gold per item is a fucking ripoff. How come a nun is making so much money anyway? She makes more money than the whores at Madam Lil's.

If you don't want to invest character points in spells you won't use that often anyway, you can always just break into the homes of certain shopkeepers and steal all of their "Divine Magic" scrolls.

And yes, magic items do effect your character, even if you didn't identify them. Problem is, you won't be able to tell the difference between good magic items and cursed ones right away.

I'm tech, but maybe I should put some points into learning this spell... giving 100 gold to identify per item is a steal :x

(new thread because the old one has been closed, you can find it there: http://rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/arcanum-identifying-magic-items.15853/)

I didn't look for the posts' dates, I found the topic via google by trying to find out how to identify items. I guess I should've made a new topic instead of using the old one to ask if going somewhat-magick on a technology character is a good idea. Next time I'll make sure to create a new topic when I will need something so it wouldn't make you angry, Bee.

So, anyone can give me their opinion of getting that magic spell on a tech char? waste of points or a good idea? any other side effects?

If you go full tech magic items won't work well for you anyway.

If you're tech you can forget selling magic items and just craft items like the explosives and sell them to merchants.

Ah, 2006.
When I was happy.

I miss 2006. I knew more about RPGs then than I do now.

Magic and tech items both have certain thresholds for capacity to use, that +2 dex or whatever tech ring won't automatically give your tech guy the full +2 (can be 1 and 0 in the case of extreme magic) and the same holds true for magic items; yes it would be a waste of points and you would have to level a stat to get that magic. I tried making a neutral char with both tech skills and magic (for teleport's sake alone) once and, while i did beat the game with it, it was far worse than just playing a neutral melee/thrown/or archery build. IIRC, using magic item on an extremely tech aligned character will also add to your critical failure chance and vice a versa for using tech items on magic character.

And as potato said just make grenades and you'll find that shops will never have enough money to give you.

I feel like I actually knew what an RPG was in 2006. Now? Now I just don't know anymore. It's a crazy mixed up world I tell ya. Sometimes I play mindless shooters just to feel something... Anything. But the rush fades and I'm left with... Nothing.
