New World, as noted by Paul Tassi when screenshots and concepts from the game were first announced, looks like almost every MMORPG we've seen before, especially Elder Scrolls Online, Rust and Skyrim. The focus on sandbox design, similar to Star Wars Galaxies appears to be a huge part of the game, as well as crafting and building.

The video does seem to give a good rundown of what the game looks like, and don't get it twisted, it looks fine but seeing that this is the first title from Amazon in the realm of gaming we were kind of expecting to be absolutely blown away. Specs on the graphics are unknown at this time, and while we could speculate, it's likely that Amazon isn't finished with minor tweaks and details to enhance the look and feel of the game before it launches into closed beta.

In the game you play a settler, settling a new world (snore) and hunt animals and build things. Leveling up is a huge part of the game, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever played an MMORPG. Leveling up is pretty much the only purpose of any of those games, as you can't do much without leveling up that ever important crafting skill. Frankly, even with leaked footage, it doesn't seem that Amazon is breaking new ground here with New World. The only big difference between Amazon producing this type of game versus a triple-A developer is the Amazon cloud services, which could seriously improve the number of available servers and server load.

This isn't the first time game footage was leaked on Pornhub, as Fallout 4 was leaked on the site back in 2015. Considering that this is the first major gaming title from Amazon, the leak might be a good thing as all the reviews and articles popping up about this snippet might give Amazon some direction it won't find from closed alpha players.

Footage of Amazon’s MMO New World has been leaked online. The nine-minute video shows one of the closed beta players exploring a grassy area of New World in what is clearly an early stage of play.

The leak was originally posted on, of all places, PornHub. This video was posted online by the YouTube channel Less than Epic (via Reddit). The leak gives us an insight into some of the game’s core systems. The game plays from a third-person perspective, and boasts some typically MMO features, such as an abilities bar running along the bottom of the screen, and numbers spilling out of any enemy that you attack.

In terms of play, however, the game evidently takes as much inspiration from survival games as it does traditional MMOs. There’s a strong emphasis on harvesting resources from the world to craft equipment, while actually creating an item will require you to use certain tools like tanning racks for animals skins and forges for extracting metals.

Combat, meanwhile has a more action-y flavour about it. At the start of the video, the player is stalking a bison, shooting at it with arrows. When passing through an area of tall grass, however, the player is ambushed by what appears to be an undead creature. Hitting an enemy seems to come entirely down to the player’s own aiming skill, while your level and abilities will determine how much damage you deal.

There are some things we don’t see in the footage. Building structures is one, as New World will supposedly feature an almost entirely player-built world. We do get a brief glimpse of a castle with banners hanging from the walls, but whether that was constructed by players or not is impossible to know. The other is how guilds, or “companies” as they’re known in New World, will work. The idea is that, much like Rust, players will be able to form (and break) their own alliances. But we only see one player for the duration of the video, so we can’t tell how rigid or loose that system will be.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the video comes toward the end, when we get to see the map of New World. This shows off a big chunk of the available environment, and there’s also a Legend in the bottom left that describes the environment types. These include Forest, Grassland, Highlands, Marsh, and Shrubland. There are also icons for Windmills, castles, and Crests with surrounding coloured pools that I would assume represent faction territory. Here's an image of the map.

It’s good to finally see the game in action, even if it is from a leak. I am concerned that New World lacks something unique to make it stand out from the MMO crowd. The whole survival and crafting fare is hardly new, and there are plenty of games, multiplayer or otherwise, that do this sort of thing in a less generic manner. That said, perhaps the game will be very different once scaled up to Amazon’s goal of 10,000 players per server.

Single sharded Rust with an actual community in the thousands with actual consequences is a pretty solid hook to be honest.

Imagine actually paying money for an early access MMO from a literally who studio in the current year.

Wouldn't call it literally who. Amazon Games poached a big part of other San Diego studios, most notably Sony Online Entertainment (now Daybreak Games) who made Planetside and Everquest. Especially notable is John Smedley who is basically the reason why Planetside 2 is a thing.

The reason why Planetside 2 is a monumental failure you mean?

The state of current MMOs makes me upset. In vanilla WoW PKing led to some interesting stories, such as the Orc Angwe who became famous for PKing and forcing people to pay others for protection just to pass through the area and continue on with the story. There's even an entire website dedicated to his legacy.

Nowadays PKing is considered "toxic" or "predatory behaviour"... Why don't they just have non-PK worlds if it upsets people so much?

WoW was already a massive shift towards the carebear direction from earlier MMOs
Not like it matters, any MMO that tries to mix PvE and PvP ends up sucking at both because everything becomes identical(sawyerism due to PvP) and you might as well go play CSGO with dragons.

As much as I'll crap on modern themeparkshit MMOs, vanilla WoW is not as much of a problem as it's made out to be. It had attunement and no LFG/LFR beyond area based chatboxes... None of this is even remotely carebear.
WoW did gradually become more shitty through expansions and patches, but at launch the experience was fine.

it's "tale of neocron" time.
neocron managed this with style: every character had a chip implanted into his brain to force him being pve. remove the chip and you could attack all those who removed their chip. people without the chip had raised stats, so they could wade through pve more easily, thus gathering resources for the crafting of the best items faster.
why gather and craft? to fight over territory and installations. on foot and on vehicles.

I forgot this was still a thing.

Removing PvP is a step in the right direction if they want the game to actually have a population higher that near cancelled Gacha games but then again it doesnt seem to be PvE, I am kinda fed up of people that look at Ultima Online with nostalgia blinders and think they can replicate it in 2020, things changed from then ... people changed from those times, for every "Legendary PvPer that I furious masturbate every thing to" there are thousands of griefers that just "do it for the Lulz", I remember a thing from BDO as a example ... speed hacks, before the NA/EU release those were not heard of but moment the game was released outside Korea people started working on how to hack the game, one thing they figured out was it was possible to make characters speed to so high you could not hit them and of course that was exactly what happened and quickly patched. This are the people that want the "open world PvP can loot the corpse" and moment they start crack down on then or the game goes into its death spiral, they move on ... or they get bored and move to the next flavor of the month.

lol at that thread full of people wanting yet another PvP gankbox game. Why? Darkfall is right there
and it's fucking dead because just like arena shooters, everyone who claims to want one doesn't play them when they actually exist

One of the problems we observed with this system was that some high level players were killing low level players, A LOT. Sometimes exclusively. This often led to solo or group griefing scenarios that created a toxic environment for many players. To be clear, this behavior was not shown by all PvP players, but enough to cause significant issues.

We set out to build a compelling world full of danger and opportunity that begs to be explored. The intended design was never to allow a small group of players to bully other players. Based on what we saw, we realized that we needed to make fundamental changes and not just incremental fixes, (which we tried several times during the Closed Alpha).

I can see these people were very experienced with MMOs when they haven't foreseen that. Wow, it's almost as if this model is completely unsustainable as we've seen in many games before.
If we hadn't invented laws against "open world PvP" in the real world, and enforced them, we'd still be living in caves. Just take a look at Africa.

Well if you look at that subreddit (r/MMORPG) you can guess why despite crashing and burning there is always a few under development, there are too many people enamored with the concept that never pause to think why there is no "open world PvP" in real life or rather, we dont play MMOs to be subject to the same shit we take in real life.

They all have "solutions" that either been implemented with no real success or its not hard to find ways around then, I suspect most of those people are also Libertarians considering how disconnected they are ... or just stupid really considering they want Amazon to fund their sandpit, they all have some great dreams of how it would be just like the real world with a player based economy and such player driven stories ... I kinda blame EVE for that crap since people have very romantic ideas of how EVE big wars were despite pretty much everyone with a brain realizing it wont be Battle of Leyte Gulf but its playing EVE with a shitload of lag and its also why despite a lot of game trying to go into the whole "player driven narrative" none had any success, the whole "create your own fun" is for children that are in that age with everything is new and exciting.

In the end such "open world PvP" would have to be incredible complex mimicking real with playing have also to deal with consequences, the whole issue that they always ignore is there are no real consequences to PKing, especially for the PKer and none of those PvPers want then to exist, in fact they want the victim to suffer the most of the negative consequences losing their progress and that says all, a system as complex as it would have to be in order to work would have to offer such penalties that nobody would want to casual engage in such so ... it would not be fun so nobody dont want it to begin.
