A discussion was had in Shoutbox today which raised an interesting question.

What would the cRPG equivalent of this graphic look like?

Do we have anyone on the Codex who is both qualified and capable of creating a cRPG version of the above graphic?

  1. AdvancedHero:
Then wouldn't that make Rogue the king of all cRPGs?
  2. AdvancedHero:
    or NetHack?
  3. Pink Eye:
    ^^^
  4. Latro:
it's not preposterous, diablo really did have a big influene
  5. Gregz:
    yeah, it did
  6. AdvancedHero:
Diablo is a real time clone of Rogue
  7. Latro:
whether it's good or bad is up in the air (to certain people)
  8. Gregz:
I'm not sure what PE is trying to say
  9. Fairfax:
"Pink Eye: Oh wait that's what Dracula says. That quote is like a meme, cool." It was added in the allegedly poor translation and became a meme yeah
  10. Gregz:
AdvancedHero: Diablo is a real time clone of Rogue <- yes, this was the intention
  11. Pink Eye:
Me either Gregz. I need to rethink my thoughts.
  12. AdvancedHero:
Gregz: So I'm saying that by that logic, Rogue is the king influencer according to them

  14. Latro:
rogue is certainly a king influencer
  15. Fairfax:
    It is
  16. Pink Eye:
Alex: https://rpgcodex.net/forums/index.p...utely-an-rpg-explanation.130206/#post-6350281 <-- Oh hey I read that one. Back when that thread was still new.
  17. Gregz:
I don't know what 'king influencer' means, but it reminds me of this graphic http://www.wardshelley.com/paintings/pages/fullpics/HistSciFi2.jpg
  18. Alex:
I am afraid I was a bit too long winded in my argument.
  19. Gregz:
and if there was a cRPG equivalent of that graphic, Rogue and Diablo would be pretty large
  20. Gregz:
    and Rogue would precede Diablo
  21. Gregz:
and BG2 would certainly be large, and precede kingfaker
  22. Pink Eye:
    Fallout too
  23. Pink Eye:
I think Fallout was a huge influence on some games
  24. Pink Eye:
    well 1 and 2 anyways.
  25. Latro:
    nah
  26. Gregz:
yeah, it would be complicated...but Wasteland would be large (not as large as Fallout), but the direct predecessor
  27. Latro:
    there's not many fallout-likes
  28. Latro:
    diablo-likes yes, roguelikes, yes
  29. Fairfax:
You can have a great influence without having many clones
  30. Alex:
It seems there are a lot less rogue-likes being worked on nowadays than 7 years ago.
  31. Latro:
true, but would it be a "king" influence
  32. Fairfax:
I think so, look at Ultima Underworld
  33. Latro:
king implies it creates its own genre imo
