Even the Fallout pictures look like crap, they're so fucking zoomed out you can't tell what the fuck is going on.

All in all, yes, images look "pretty" and well-drawn. But do they convey mood? No. Any trained monkey can acquire technical skill, but artistic capacity cannot be trained.

And don't even get me started on the anime-looking ones.

These pictures come from Japanese PC games (and a few PC Engine) from the 80s and early 90s. They were mostly taken from the FM Towns Marty, restinpeaches and noirlac blogs. I posted a topic about Japanese PC art a while ago, maybe some of you will be interested.

And there's not too many of those, to be honest. It's probably got nothing to do with 2D or 3D, and more like the right artist at the right time.

I can count with one hand the number of games that could stand judgement due to their visual design alone:

The Witcher
RAGE
DOOM 3

All other games in my list need the other departments. Considering there's been made hundreds of thousands of games, three is a pretty sad number.

All the others have something that pisses me off, or are generally uninteresting, even though overall they are miles ahead from shit like, say, Project Eternity.

What I'm saying is, that given the choice of playing a game that looks like PE or like those 8-bit pictures, I would go for the latter.
