'19/'20 - correct NDS to buy (perhaps none)

Not gonna lie, I'm urged to buy my first handheld since Gameboy Colour. I've lived through the era of the PSP vs. DS war in mild confusion, genuinely unable to pick one, then it was suddenly Vita vs. 3DS. Now that Vita's fucking dead, the only correct choice appears to be the DS, as I'm not keen on Switch (nor do I own a TV set, losing most of the gimmick quality of a Switch).

My question is - which NDS is the correct one to buy in '19/'20? I must tell you, I'm utterly confused about the whole 3DS vs. 2DS thing, now there's New 3DS I comprehend even less - which one is the most reasonable machine of the bunch, if one was to choose?

Holding that in mind, I'd like to ask another question. I'm not very big on action games other than classic platformers, which is why I was always slightly in favour of Nintendo's devices, but does their system have some quality RPGs as well? Vita appeared to have more of the sort, but it's dead and gone at this point.

I'm counting on your help, friens

2DS XL and softmod it to play backups. Buy a larger micro SD card to hold more games and a DS flashcart if you want perfect DS game backup compatibility.

Keep in mind there's a way to run DS games on a 3DS without a flashcard, however as mentioned by The Decline, compatibility isn't 100%.
